ACT’C-PRIME MINISTER’S REPLY IN FOR AI ATI ON GIVEN 'JO MEMBER The following letters have been received from Air. A. C-. Hultcpiist, member for the district, for publication : To Mr. Huitquist from, the Hoik P. Fraser* Acting Prime Minister:— “I am in receipt of your letter of the 14th. instant enclosing a communication and resolutions forwarded to you by the County Clerk at Opotiki. Copies of these resolutions were sent to me under, cover of a letter which 1 recently received from Air. Merry, and for your information a copy of my reply is attached hereto. The copy of the letter forwarded to the county clerk, Opotiki, reads as follows: “1 am in receipt of your letter of the 9th. instant, enclosing copies of resolutions passed) at a meeting of residents of Opotiki and adjoining districts held on the sth. idem, when the position affecting the construction ol; a railway between Taneatua and .Opotiki was discussed. “In reply. I have to say that there was given to the. Alember for the District, to he read, at the .meeting, a statement of the Government’s intentions regarding this matter, but 1 understand from him that lie was .given no opportunity of reading it. In the circumstance's 1 can only refer you to Air. Huitquist for information concerning the statement-, in question. “As yen are aware', in such matters the Alember for the District constitutes the channel of communication between the Government and tile local body or other party concerned. “The request conveyed! in the resolution regarding the State Highway between Opotiki and the railhead at Taneatua will have consideration at the earliest opportunity.’’
