Sir AYalter's colony was founded on Roanoke island, on the Carolina coast, in 1087. When a supply ship returnedl from England later, the colonists had vanished. Hew traces of them have been found since. Now a stone has been found near Center Hill, about five miles from the Chowan River, North Carolina, hearing marks which experts say are carvings. Some of the marks are believed to be letters. An earlier stone with several Words deciphered upon it was found in casts t i'ti .North Carolina in 10'37. Since then a'search for further stones has been made in the lmne of clearing upc the .mystery of the colonists’ fate.
