WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WAI A NA.-N UKUKOU BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS (News Correspondent.) The Wnimmni-Xukuhou Women’s Institute celebrated their tenth birthday in, the Waimana Hall last Wednesday alter noon. There was a. full attendance of members and all the surrounding sister institutes, were represented; also members of the To Kaiia, and Uiuai ainutu Institutes. Airs. Marra presided and welcomed members and visitors and expressed the -hope they would have a pleasant uiurnotui. The meeting opened with tin Glee Club singing a pakelia and Alacr.i welcome, this being followed by the Institute song. The minutes were read, and correspondence dealt with. It was decided to hold a husbands’ and friends’ evening on the 7th. September. Two new members were, enrolled. A musical competition was won by •• a Alaori member. A sketch entitled “Ado about Nothing”, was' well acted by Airs. John Addison and Airs. Aiitchell and a ■-• ■play, “Engaging a Alaid”, was well presented by mem hers of the .Drama Circle, all piayers receiving great ovation. The Glee (Jluli sang and acted “Ten Pretty Girls.” in costume, which was much enjoyed lie' all. Little Alonica Boynton and Airs. Boynton sang a duet most sweetly and an encore was called for. During the afternoon, Airs. A. P. AVylde was presented with a posy of violets from the members', in appreciation of what she had done to help the Drama Circle, as Airs. W.vlde was the author of the sketch and play presented . The Maori mom hers of the Omaralnutu Institute also gave a clever little play, acted in a Alaori wliare, and the members of the To Kaha Institute gave native sorngs and dances which were much appreciated. A dcljcious afternoon tea was served by the 'members, and a pink and white birthday cake with ten candles, y took pride of place. The ingredients were donated by Airs. Jerram, and the cake was made by Airs. Eagle and iced by All'. AI. King. Airs .Woolfield, the president of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation, cut the cake and wished the institute a happy birthday. 'The candles were lit and extinguished by the president and past- presidents. The presidents of the various insti- r totes thanked the president and membersl for the most pleasant afternoon spent and wished 1 the institute many more happy birthdays. The singing of ’ the National Anthem closed the meeting.
