COUNTY WORKS
THE ENGINEER’S REPORT The county engineer. Air. \Y. W. Upton, reported a.s follows at the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Council Jield to-day:— Contracts Competed.—Contract Jso. 599 for gravelling .39.0 chains of Pile’s road, has been completed. Ruatuna-Ohiwa Road.—The distance from tile end of the formation or the Ruafuna Road to Humfrey’s and Batey’s travelling through Section 125 or 120 would be about 1 : ' { miles, and the distance from the present road on the Oliiwa Harbour through Reeve’s would ho practically the same. The distance to Opotiki would lie shorter via Reeve’s than going round Runtuna, hut against that there would he an expensive piece across, the mud flat to form. Access via Section 125 would certainly be the cheaper of the two routes, but the question, of loading right round the Harbour comes, in, as there would not likely be two roads formed so close to one another. ■ With reference to portions of the existing R untuna Road, not having been Gazetted, 1 do not consider it necessary at present to have the legalisation done, a.s surely, the people asking for roads will not object to those already made and with the consent of former owners. Works Carried Out.—Plans and specifications have been prepared for installing twin culverts and road formations on the Peti Poti Road at Pierrepoints. ■Gravelling repairs hare been done on the Upper Waioeka, Wairata, Waiata, Apanui, Waiiiui. Warrington, Chalk)in* Upper o,taia. maul. Waioeka Pa Roads. The grader and planer have worked cm Chulklin’s, Waiawa, Apanui, Warrington. Otara and Otara East roads. Widening the road and protective work have been, done on the Upper Otara Road near Horton’s, at this place the fence encroaches on the road and should be shifted by the owner. Public notice has been given closing the Tercre and Whitikau roads for heavy motor vehicle traffic. Jt. may now lie possible toi keep these roads in somewhat fair order. I have arranged! with Air. Mahy to instal a wooden, gate, and repair another one on the Huntress Creek Fiood-gate. I may add that all the gates are somewhat damaged and in my opinion should be replaced with concrete gates ns it becomes necessary.
