TO THE EDITOR

HUNT CLUB CYMKhANA Sir, —It has conn 1 to my knowledge that the Opotiki Hunt Club intends Holding its annual Gymkhana one Saturday in September and it tin’s information is correct I desire on behall of the shop-keepers apd general public to protest against the date arranged and to ask the Hunt Club to reconsider the matter and alter the date ml this fixture to Labour Day. which da," is most suitable to most people. At present 1 believe that the Hunt Club is being financid partially at least by funds from the Tauranga .Racing Club, which money 1 believe is being given as compensation to the people of Opotiki for having had their race meetings taken away from -them. Coder the circumstances the least that the Hunt Club can..do is to give the people, of Opotiki their annual Picnic Race .Meeting on the day tiie Opotiki people want. After all for this.annual event Labour Day is the logical day for this meeting as in Opotiki there are as a ride no other fixtures and. moreover tlio.se people who have to work lor their daily bread in shops and offices will he able to attend. Also, ironi the farmers’ point of view Labour Day is more suitable in that most of the cows wid he in hy* Alien whereas in September calving is at the peak and the days being shorter than in October the farming population has of necessity to leave earlier in the day. Sooner or later the funds from Tauranga. will not lie forthcoming and the Hunt -Club will be depending entirely for its support on the Public of Opotiki. so surely those who are at the head mf the Club are not so shortsighted as to try and foist the wrong

day on the public, especially as Labour Day is the day everyone or practically everyone wants the Gymkhana to he field. Of course J. know that .there will lie someone ready to say that Labour Day' means that horses will have to be fed a month longer. Alight i venture to suggest, Sir, that such an argument will net hold water as from what L can gather not one third of the ho loses which are hunted in Opotiki are fed; in fact, 1 would go further and. say that one tenth of the horses* only are regularly hard fed. Anyway, ' tlie horses which arc fed are owned - by people who can afford to feed them or by people who feed them, not only for hunting but- also l’o-r racing, purposes. Last year 1 heard l the Gymkhana spoken of as a benefit event- for race horses which were to he raced at Gisborne and many people were disgusted at. the idea. if this year's event is being held for the same purpose and not for the benefit of the Public, then tlie Hunt Club is not deserving, of any support at all either in the way of trophies or in gate money collected on the course. The Hunt Ciuii is not in a position to be independent as actually the Tauranga money is the •people’s money and if the people are to he slighted then the idea 1 had when their money first became available is correct and that idea was that a bed! should have been endowed at the Hospital rather than the money, should he wasted by tlie Hunt Club. I do not deeni it necessary to say more as 1 am not. an able writer but 1 hope that others who feel about this matter as L do will come forward anc% prevail on the Hunt Club to alter the date of their annua] fixture to Labour. Day. Thanking you for your valuable space. GiIiINEIRAL PUBLIC.
