THE MAIN HIGHWAY S r.—What is the matter with local hoe. ' men ? .Procrastination is putting ih< mad problem right into our parliamentary representative’s hands. Mr. Hukquist is working almost night and day for Whakatane’s pet coastal speedway and all y-our efforts to wako up this sleepy hollow are absolutely wasted. While Opotiki has been fooling with the idea of a publicmeeting, .Mi -sr.s. Hultquist and Johnson must he smiling to themselves at Upotiki’s puny attempts to arouse our sleepy lenders and the ease with which they aii pulling the wool over the eyes of om lethargic councillors. Mr. Johns( n has apparently been a keen advocate of a speedway to Whakatano for some time if rumour is correct. Why? Because he makes many trips monthly to the “centre” of the Bay ol .Plenty and does not wish to pick daisies by the wayside. A coastal speedway would be just- the thing. Mr. Hultquist obviously hopes to put a spanner in the works if he is able to attend the public(?) meeting which is likely to take place .any time in the next six months ii our parliameutarian can secuio a few postponements tr suit his convenience. What is wanted is a genuine expression ol Opotiki public opinion, not one that might he swayed by Mr. Hultijuisfs noted debating abilities. Mr. .Unit(joist is going to got his road, dpi or die. mark mv Words! UNITED. [Unless something unforeseen happens Mr, Hultquist will attend the public meeting, which has been fixed lor. August sth. at Mr. Muitcjuist’s suggestion, this fitting in with his i'.'r t nigh 11 v Sessional visits to his Immo. Mr. Hultquist has lit) intention of holding up the meeting. Mr. Johnson lias always been quite frank in his advocacy of a. short road to Whakatano and our correspondent is presumptuous in his attitude..—-Ed. Opotiki News.]
