A meeting of all representatives on the Centennial Celebrations Committee will be held in St. John’s Halt On-Thursday 27tli. July; + JLt is hoped that all sections of the community will combine to .make the celebrations a great success. Coast Road Contracts. An advertisement of interest to contractors appears in to-day’s issue. Separate tenders are invited by the Public Works Department for the construction of two culverts and one bridge approach. The nearest work is at Umaranuitu, where a culvert will be put in.
Cow Fatally Injured in Duel. After lying unconscious for three days and showing no signs of coming to, a valuable cow owned! by Mr. lv. D. 'Galloway, Manakau, had to be destroyed. The animal was injured when it- charged another cow, being knocked unconscious when they met head cn. A veterinary surgeon who was consulted regarding treatment for the animal said it- was the lirst case of its kind of which lie knew. An Apology. In a letter to the Opotiki News, M'r. A. G. Hultquist. M.P., states that he "regrets he will be unable to visit Opotiki to-morrow. It states that provided the public meeting to bo held iu connection with railway and road matters is held at.a week-end, he will be present for the whole of the day and the meeting ju the evening. Mr. Hultquist adds that his health is now much better and he is trying bard to overtake arrears of correspondence.
Mr. waUon’s Advise. Advice to husbands in their actions .following a quarrel was ottered by Air. Ei L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court on -Monday at Gisborne during the hearing of a maintenance case. A male defendant "as giving evidence to the effect that, in a row with his wife, lie had not struck her but had merely defendec. himself. “A man does not detenu himself against a woman, he either beats her or runs away,” commented His Worship. “My advice to you when you have a row with your wife is to run away and throw your hat back in.”
Gisborne Dairy Herds. According to the Gisborne Herald, a recovery from the- past season’s big fall in dairy production is expected by the Kia Ora Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., and speaking at the annual meeting of suppliers this week, flu chairman of directors. Air. Al. Doyle, hoped that the coining season’s production would be returned to beyond 1500 tons once more. The company was confident that at least 1000 more cows would he added to the herds supplying it. during the coming season. Other reports state that the daily herds are wintering very well as a result of the good winter conditions, and that whereas it was thought there would be a general shortage in liny supplies, some farmers are finding themselves in the position of having Imv to sell.
Whale Caught by Wanganui Man. “You may not believe it, few people will, but I once caught a whale,’’ said Air. J. Siddells, of] Wanganui and formerly of Gisborne, recently, commenting on the fact that' a wiiale had been seen near the vessel Westmoreland in the Wanganui roadstead. Describing his experience, Air. Sickle!ls said that when in the police' force at Napier lie had been on duty near the wharf in the inner harbour about midnight. That day three whales had been seen off shore. “I heard a great deal of commotion,” Air. Sitldells said, “the water seemed to be foaming a good deal, and I went to investigate. One of the whales had! drifted in. 1 obtained the assistance of the mate on board the vessel Kiwi, and between us we managed to. tie the whale up. It was dead when the tide- went out, and we sold the catch for CIO.”
