SERIOUS QUESTIONS

s. si ■*.. Sir,—What is the matter with Oyytiki that there s *',-is liajsiw-ihvny, 'Wfe y . • or>XA...<>

people here seem to be stuck in a groove, causedl by the same persons staying on, and on, in the leading positions, as if they had a ■ lifetime’s monopoly of tlic handling .of . public funds. How do they work it? By flattery chiefly. Those people- attend women’s meetings, and gush and flatter alf around to try ,to hypnotise (as mason-wasps treat their prey) and thus induce the women -in charge of the. public funds there, -to hand! the money over to provide the same old delegates of both sexes, with free pleas-ure-trips all over Now Zealand, where they dot little but make fulsome speeches of self-aggrandizement principally. Soon the delegates cause great jealousy among the “other fellows”—men and women both—who would dearly love to have a few pickings from tin' public collections. Finally the majority of the local people 1become apathetic and gradually lose alb interest in. council and other public bodies’ doings: i matter how worthy; rich, or perfect any platform ’"speakers lrihy be, they must remember .that-, is the spic.e of. life' ’, and that sameness leads "to> indifference.- -Now bow. is it that that simple matter, was not considered a few years ago, and the Opotiki’people clid -.not work on it^-Ji ke*.■■ AV hakata ll c did.; - For it is monotony that causes' indifference and stifles interest in p,i,(l i'i i c p rocced i n gs.

'l'lie above are some of the reasons why Opotiki is without a railway, tind M *why tfie place is so far behind iAA’fiakatanc in 'many ‘.respects, ' where •public. buildings, bands and other matters are concerned. SAli’G AND KIM,F-COAIHLACFNT.
