Temperatures. North Island temperatures On Saturday at 9 a.in. were as follows: Auckland 50 ? degrees, Tauranga and Wellington 43, Opotiki 40, East Cape 48, Gisborne 42, and Napier 41. Ins;:ec"tjr of Hospitals. Dr. 1C A. Shore, inspector of hospitals under the Health Department, arrived from Wellington in Opotiki during the week-end and transacted business on Saturday in. connection with the Opotiki public hospital. Early Lamtrs. Another instance of early lambing, hi the Opotiki district lias been reported. Lambs on Air. Cl T. Clark’s farm arrived about a month ago, and since then other lambs have been born. This is probably the earliest lambing in the district but it- would he interesting to know is earlier lambing than this has been observed. Memorial unveiled. There w.as a large attendance of coast residents - yesterday at the unveiling of the memorial at. Omaio. to the late Mr. Conghlan, who as headmaster of the Omaio school for many years. The ceremony, was performed by lit. Rev. E. A. Dennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, who had previously officiated at a confirmation service at Torere.
WhaSiatanei Taxis. Opposition was expressed by the Wliakatano Borough Council to the proposal that taxi cabs in the borough and country should he brought under the provisions of the 'J rin sport Licensing Act; when it was pointed out that tliei council had now taken the .necessary steps to control the licensing of taxis. Motor Service Extended. The coast motor service being run by Messrs. Drake Bros, of To Kahn, is to be. extended as far as Ruatoria. The new service* will come into operation as-from Monday next. July 21. The service will he a tri-weekly one, ears leaving O-potiki one day and returning the next. « -f 'Transport of Rugby Players. Some Rugby Unions throughout #tS T ew Zealand have for some time past met- with difficulties iit regard to the transport of players bv private cars. Idnlightenment on the question was ro.ceived by the management committee of the 'Wellington Rugby Union by a letter from the New Zealand Rugby Union. The letter read: “We have taken this matter up with the Commissioner of Transport, and we find that- players may be taken to their games in private cai;s provided the.se cars do not ply for hire, and also provided no charge; is made.” Air Service. The arrival of Union Airways Lockheed monoplane over Opotiki this .morning, caused! considerable interest. A loud roar announced the approach of the ’plane, which presented ai fine 'sight as it travelled at a high speed over the town. The Lockheed: is noticeably faster than the four-engined planes which are now undergoing the usual overhaul. Passengers on Friday included the following: Mr. Id. A. Bunkall, Auckland to Opotiki ; Mr. D. Lawson, Opotiki to.'Gisborne. Saturday: Mr. L. Kelly. Opotiki to Tauranga; Messrs. J>. Abbot and B. Alorice, from Opotiki to Auckland.
Shingle Cartage Prices. The now scale of charges for cartage has been issued by the No. 1 Licensing Authority and will come into effect next week. The Whakatane borough foreman lias informed the council that gravely to be delivered to the Heads will now cost about, lls Cd l a yard instead of os a yard as had been estimated. Cr. W. Sullivan said he thought the carriers were satisfied to do the job for the former prices. The district should not- be called upon to pay something like double the present charges. The public would have to pay. for it and the carriers themselves might lose, business. The council decided to protest to the licensing authority.
