power Failure. On account of the failure of the power supply this afternoon, it wiis impossible to set. up the court and other news. These reports will appear in Friday’s issue. Temperatures. North Island temperatures at 9 o’clock yesterday morning were : Auckland 4.3 degrees, Tauranga. 41, Opotiki 35. Ksist. Cape 42, Gisborne and Nupier 40, and Wellington 39. Opotiki temperatures at 9 a.in. ..on Sunday and Monday were 41 and 37 respectively. Referee Takes a Pass. Considerable amusement was afforded the spectators at a Rugby football match in Winto.ii when the. referee took a. pass. As soon as lie grasped the ball he realised his mistake and blew the whistle for a. scrum. The referee is having his first season with the whistle and was a player last season. Change of Planes. From Monday next the aeroplanes which are at present flying between Auckland and Gisborne will be replaced by four two-engined machines for about a month. Lockheed Electra ’planes will be used and the Z.K.-A.F. I). Kuaka, Z.K.-A.F.E. Keren i, Z.K.-A.-G.J. Kalin, and Z.K.-A.G.K. Kalia ’planes will visit Opotiki during the month. They are faster than four-engined machines at -present being used, which will undergo an overhaul.

Heavy Frosts. The frosts experienced in the Opotiki district have been the heaviest for several years, and the thermometer this morning again registered a low level, although the frost was not as heavy as the two previous mornings. This morning’s frost was of 14 degrees. Numerous water pipes have burst- since the cold,- spell set- in and even taps inside' buildings have been frozen. Radiators of motor vehicles standing outside, which did not have the water drained out, have been reported to have burst. Considerable damage lias been done to cauliflowers and cabbages, the loss being particularly heavy at the Waioeka marketgarden.

Guns on Roof. When he visited Helsinki. Jormerlv Helsingfors, the capital of Finland, last year. Mr. .H. TO. Poole, Foil don, who is visiting New Zealand, was impressed by the fact that most ol the buildings, houses as well as warehouses and factories, had flat roofs. He was surprised to learn that, the reason was that such roofs could he used for the mounting of guns in case of war—another evidence of the general unrest and international distrust in .Europe. The change of the name of Helsingfors to Helsinki was in a line with the desire for watertight nationalism. Helsingfors was the name of the city when the country was under the domination of the Swedes. Woman’s Dilemma. No little amusement to those who saw tlio incident, and some embarrassment to the victim, >vas caused by a ball of wool at a function in the Napier Municipal Theatre. Entering the theatre by one door, and changing her mind as to which side of the house she would sit, a woman member of the audience dropped a ball of wool as she entered 1 , but it remained unnoticed. However, when she retraced her steps and went in by the other door, a trail of wool followed her across the lobby and into the building on the other side. The mishap was noticed by one of the officials, who commenced to re-wind the hall and the owner of the wool was’ soon located at the end of the trail.
