YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB

MANY ’ ACTIVITIES REPORTED APPEAL FOR RECRUITS Activities during last month on the part; of the Opotiki Young Farmers’ Club were of a very varied nature. A field day conducted) oirflie farm of -Mr. : Cl. Bennett, where demonstrations and discussions on the value of poultryraising as an adjunct to dairy-farming were fully entered into by those present. The, particular breeds favoured by Mrs. ’’Bennett, who conducts this branclf of farming- are the Black Orpington and the White Leghorn, a very large number of each being kept. Club members took a great interest in the 'demonstrations given. The thanks of the club members present were extended to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett for the opportunity to conduct a field day on their property, aiid the knowledge so freely given; also for entertaining tho.se present to afternoon tea.

The usual monthly meeting Was presided over by Mr. Gilbert Murray, owing to the. absence of the club chairman, Mr. Eric. Thompson. An address on “Civic Affairs and the power conferred on the person appointed to the Mayoralty,” was given by Mr . G. ..Moody, .members appreciating -very mucIrML.O information -given. A hearty Vote of thanks to Mr. Moody was accorded. WINTER SHOW.

The local club participated with the neighbouring clubs in the eastern section of the Bay of Plenty in a produce court at the recent Waik,ato V inter Show, securing third place. As the result of this effort, the local club ha.s suggested that the competition be conduced on a more competitive basis as between individual clubs. The experience already gained in arranging this year’s effiort will be of much value in future efforts of a similar nature. MONTHLY MEETING The usual monthly meeting of the club was held on Friday night in St. John’s Hall, Mr. E. Thompson presiding over a good attendance of members. A large amount of business was gone through. A new member, Mr. Al. Bennett, was nominated and duly welcomed. Alter some discussion, a motion was carried unanimously that the-local club become a member of the Opotiki Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Several members expressed the opinion that a section for competition among the members of clubs in this part of the district should be included in the show schedule. The club chairman and advisory president wore authorised to take the matter up with the A. and P. Association. L;' Following the disposal of the club s business, a very interesting "'’debate was conducted between a team Irom the local club, and a team from the Waimana Club. Messrs. R. Woe I field (leader), L. Macdonald, H. White and R.. White, represented the visiting" club, and for the local club Messrs. Hick Bennett, L. Beattie, M. Bennett, and J. Beattie.

The subject was, “Is disease control among live-stock of greater economic importance, than the breeding of high class producing stock.” The local club, taking the affirmative, gave a very good account of .themselves, doing their subject justice. , .Xhe visiting team annexed the honours, their experience in debating standing them in good stead, and fully meriting their win, although the margin of points was small, Wainiaha.. 178 points and the iocaf'-tOani 161. 31 r. F. K. Grant officiated as adjudicator. .Mr. J).- G. Beattie acted as chairman, and congratulated the winners and commended the losing team on the decided improvement shown "in comparison with past efforts. Air. L. H.
