MINISTER’S. PROMISE The following extracts from a letter from the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, and published in our issue of Friday, August- 12, 1938, will probably supply the information desired by “Railway Supporter” to be. published. Mr. Semple wrote as follows“I am now able to advise you definitely that the original route through the Waimana. Gorge is to be adhered to, 'the- preliminary work of surveying having already been completed.” “The men who were employed on the survey of the coastal route have now been taken off, and put on pegging through the Waimana Gorge.” “1 am arranging for the pegging of, the permanent railway line to commence at- Taneatua, and for the actual forming of the line and work associated therewith to commence as soon .as a mile an so of pegging has been completed. While work is proceed on one portion of the line, it- is planned to finalise the survey work in thegorge, and reading arrangements coincidental with that happening. “I am therefore able to assure 'you that a number of men will be engaged on the actual construction of the, line in the not so far distant future, hut to all intents and purposes the work has actually com moncedi with the pegging of the route. “1 intend to have a vote for the construction cf the railway placed oil the Supplementary Estimates, so that actual work can commence when those estimates are passed by parliament.” though ' Dennett- was rather groggy. The Aucklander got the verdict. J. Robinson (Opotiki) 10.5 v. K. Hurra n (Whakatane) 10.3. The bout opened at- a fast pace with Robinson covering up a great deal too much. The second round was full of thrills with fortunes changing rapidly. Robinson put in one great rally and had Hurran in difficulties. Both boys tired in the third round as a result of hard slogging. The final round, was full of action with both boys doing their best to come out on top. Robinson got the verdict. Ray Knox (Whakatane) 8.4 v. Jenkins (Auckland) 8.7. Knox led olf but- Jenkins showed he was a solid boxer and used his knowledge to advantage. The second round was a splendid one with Jenkins .showing cleaner hitting, but Knox was proving very hard. In the third round Knox-’-s hcadl was slapped back, as he rushed into a straight left, lvuox continued to get t-lie worst of the exchanges. In the fourth round Knox, took blow after blow to the head and was in difficulties most of the round. Jenkins, however, was losing liis sting at the finish' of the round. The last round was in Knox’s favour. Jenkins stayed down for six early in the round. Both finished in an exhausted condition after hard* fighting.
Jenkins secured a welL-earued! win. The final bout of -the evening was an exhibition bout between F. Hutchins \Y butane) and! Henry* (Whakatane) As an exhibition it could hardly be classed as of a high standard. The last bout of the evening was between G. Lysaglit (Opotiki) 10.0 and Rl. Lyall (Auckland champion) 10.8. Lysaght led off but although the round was fairly lively, there was no serious hitting. Roth put some sting into* their work in the next round with the Aucklander showing up in the clinches. Roth found the third round a liardi one with no let-ups. The fourth round went to Lyall, the Aucklander coming' out on top in the clashes. The last round was a good one, and the verdict went to jdie Aucklander.
