Expenditure on Highways. , “The revenue of the Main Highways Board for the ensuing year is expected! to be about £2,750,000,” said Mr. C. J. Talbot, South island counties representative on that, body, at the annual meeting of the No. 15District Highways Council in. Timnrit. Giving details of the revenue, Mr. Talbot said it was anticipated that tyre tax would produce £150,000, registration, etc.. £600,000, and petrel tax £2,000,000. The expenditure last year was expected- to amount to about £5,000.000, but., it- had been slightly exceeded. A simitar amount of. expenditure had been budgeted; for in ,thc ensuing year.
Whakatane Sports Facilities. It will come as a surprise to many Opotiki people to know— that apart from a very valuable domain in the borough, the 'Whakatane grounds lack the usual facilities. According to the Whakatane Beacon, there are no dressing sheds for players, conveniences. grandstand for seating accommodation. lighting facilities for night training, while a motor mower is also needled. In comparison, Opotiki is apparently well off. as the reserve has two separate dressing sheds, grandstand with two dressing rooms underneath. conveniences and a number pi’ powerful electric lights for night sports and football training. The Opotiki Rugby Union provided a light which cost £4O. and in addition other lights were provided byt the Athletic Club. The Rugby Union also made a substantial eputribution towards the cost of the grandstand. A triplex mower has been provided by the Domain- Board, while a motor' mower is also available. A strong effort is now being made to .secure proper facilities at the Whakatane domain, 'and with the progress being made in Whakatane there should be no difficulty in raising a substantial sum towards the cost of first-class facilities.
