Temperatures. North Island temperatures at 9 o’clock yesterday morning were: Auckland and East ■Gape 61 degrees. Tauranga 55, Opotiki 56, Gis bo rnb 59, and Wellington 51. Succession! of Frosts. Seven frosts in succession" were experienced in 'Gisborne last week. The heaviest frost in the week was one of S.B degrees on May 30, while on Saturday and Sunday the frost reading was 8.3 degrees, compared with Monday-’ sj frost of 5.3 degrees. Wild Pig Bonus. Advice has keen received that the Government has decided to’pay a bonus oin wild pigs. One’ shilling will he paid for the green snout and' tail oi each pig killed between the Ist. of June, 1939 and 29th. February. 1910. The payment will apply to all parts cf New Zealand • and stock inspector’s have been appointed as recording and paying agents. Obituary. The death took place at his home on Saturday night, of Mr. Walter Heid. He was ,ai leading figure in Whakatane County affairs and occupied the position of chairman for an exceptionally lengthy period, and was still a member of the council at the time of his death. As chairman of the Opomiao Dairy Company he did much toi promote the development of the Opouriao and Kuatoki districts. Popular among farmers and townspeople, Maori and Pakeba, Mr. Iteid will he greatly missed. 'hue funeral took place at the Wlmkatane cemetery on Monday and was very largely attended. Hsrsss Cause Accidents. A large number of horses have been noticed grazing on borough and county roads diuring the present feed shortage, and they are a great source of danger to motorists. On Monday morning a horse rushed out from the side of the road in Gabriel’s Gully and was struck by a cream truck. The animal was badly injured and was later destroyed. A mob of horses which rushed into' a car on a small bridge near Ojnaramutu on Monday was responsible- for consul,tra bio (.lamage to the car. Mobs- of horses and cattle are being turned out at night on to the roads for grazing during this winter.
Clearing Sales. - Attention is drawn to Messrs. Wright Stephenson, and Co.’s advertisements ot clearing sales to be held at Otakiri -and at Waimana. On Friday a sale will be held on the property of Mr. W. •'](. King, Otakiri. (o' the whole of the live and dead stock, including first-class dairy stock, horses, pigs, and a comprehensive list of farm implements and sundries, while the household furniture will also be offered. On Wednesday, June 14, a sale will take place on the property of Mr. D, Ilea, of Waimana, who is leaving the district. The whole of the live and dead stock will be offered. The auctioneers recommend this sale to larmers in search of good young dairy cattle. School Football. A conscientious effort is being made this year-to foster the art of lUigby among the primary schools of the district. As an official opening of the season, a seven-a-sicle tournament has been, arranged for the morning of Saturday, June 10th. at. Connelly’s paddock. 'reams have, been entered from Omarumutu (2), Waioeka, Convent, W'oodlamLs-Kutarere, and Opotiki .District High. School (4). The teams have been diligently practising, and have been coached. The, boys arc keen, and it is confidently anticipated that patrons will be treated to seme keen contests. Play will commence at p.]s o’clock. As it is hoped to send a representative team to Jlotorua in August a collection will lie taken on the grounds towards the expenses.
