TELESCOPES STOLEN
SHIPS’ LOSSES SYDNEY, May 17.—At least five telescopes have boon stolen from ships m Sydney in the last few weeks. They have been taken from the Talune, the Waikouaiti, and the Karetu owned by the Union Steam Ship Company, the freighter Narbada, and a passenger liner which trades between Sydney - '-and' ..Great Britain. A shipping official said last evening that the thefts were puzzling, because ships’ telescopes were generally kept in Chart- rooms, and because they were heavy- and would be difficult to coni ' # coal. UJio telescopes are valued at between £2O and _£so each, and some of them have sentimental values which their owners place beyond assessment in terms of money. One of the telescopes, it was stated, had seen service through the Croat War, and the glass in it was a type which was not made now. So far as is known, no attempt has vet been made to sell the telescopes.
