Beal, in love with Aliss Filers, soon finds himself with a .rival in the person of a young business man in vhe little ijL'Xas town. While the girl prefers Beal, she has learned from long experience the uncertainty of a “nitre handler’s” life. As she tells * inm, she doesn’t mind being his wife but she doesn’t want to be his widow, and she urges him to quit before it is too J.ate. But the boy is determined to stay in the/ business until lie makes enough money to complete his medical career, and on this rock their romance runs aground. The ensuing developments, and Carey’s desperate effort to secure his daughter's happiness, make for the gripping* conclusion of the story.
