OBITUARY
ERIC • ARTHUR HOLMAN • " ' The death occurred at his home, Otara, on Tuesday, 31ay 16th., of an old Opotiki .resident, Mr. Eric Arthur Holman, in liis 73rd. year. He was born at Topsham, Devon, England, on March 4th. 1867. He was a son of the late John Btigwell Holman, of John Holman and Sons, shipowners, of Unchurch Street, London. . As a youth he visited t-lie Mediterranean and the Baltic in his father’s ships. He came to New Zealand in 1886 as a cadet to the late Sir F. W... Lang, who was at that time farming in the ’Waikato. He visitedl the Old Country again in 188‘8. Returning later he learned in Auckland, Catherine Isobt-1 Johnson, only daughter of the late John Grant and Jessie Hair Johnson. He then spentl a number of years in Victoria, New Zealand and West- Australia. in building and contracting. He and his partners built the Perth Museum, Perth Drill Hall, Swan Riven- Causeway Bridge, Fremantle Bonder Stores, Carnarvon Hospital and medical quarters and other important buildings. They liacl their own stone quarry at Rottnest Island, off Fremantle, using their own lighters; a granite quarry at Mackering and a brick works at 3lidlaud Junction. In 1899 lie came' from West to Opotiki, to take, up farming, and spent the remaining years of his life on liis farm at Otara, Opotiki. He is survived by his widow, a daughter (Mrs. Wyke) and one son, Mi-. Lionel Holman.
