OPOTIKI TERRITORIALS

A .SPLENDID EXAAIPLE GREAT KEENNESS SHOWN In our local and general columns today appears a paragraph “clipped'' lroin the Day of Plenty Beacon, WJiaka tune’s new newspaper. As the paragraph appeared to show Opotiki up in a bad light, a, lew details of the Territorial movement in Ope-tiki have been secured. In the first place Opotiki is one of the few places in New Zealand which lias kept up To strength and at times there has been a waiting list. The claim is made 'that Whakatane at present has a Territorial unit strength of o'A of all ranks. The fact is not mentioned that a recent appeal in AYhakataiie resulted in over 25 volunteers in one night coining forward as the result of an appeal by the Defence League. At no time has there been any special appeal made in Opotiki. For many years now the Opotiki unit has carried off most of the- special awards at the camps. The attendance of infantry at a recent camp included 19 men fropi Opotiki and only 5 from Whakatane-Ahi* being about the usual proportion from the two districts. As an instance of the enthusiasm shown by the Opotiki Territorials, the number of local moil attending the annual infantry camp lias been very high; Opotiki over the last five years, occupying either first- or second' place outside 'of Auckland and Hamilton areas. On the latest published figures the Opotiki strength is one third that of Gisborne, which is all to the credit of Opotiki. Sixteen Opotiki indented men aie in attendance pit the camp being held at Whangarei. this representing practically the whole Opotiki mounted strength.

Opotiki's line record is undoubtedly due to the enthusiasm jsliown by the local officers, who have spared no effort to give the men under them a first-class training. Upotiki congratulates -Whakatane on its belated spurt, which it is hoped' will be maintained. Upotiki can take consolation in the fact that" Whakatane is apparently making no effort* to “pinch ’ the Opotiki drill hall, as it is about the-only thing in Opotiki Whakatane Ims not had a “shot” at.
