Sharp Earthquake. A, sharp earthquake shock was felt in Opotiki this morning at 5.45 o’clock. The increments, 'were strong enough to awaken most sleepers. Temperatures. Temperatures at 9 a.in. on Saturday morning were: Auckland 63 degrees/ Tauranga GO. Opotiki 54, East Cape 57, Gisborne 59, "Napier 56, and Wellington 50. Cattle Movements. Large mobs of cattle have passed through Opotiki this month, the movements last week being exceptional, many hundreds of cattle arriving last week. Another big mob left Opotiki yesterday. Where Traffic Domes Are High. A feature, which impressed him in Sydney was the height of-the traffic domes in the streets, Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P. told! members of the Palmerston North ltotary Club. People had coinplained about the height of the domes in Palmerston Noi|ch, but in Sydney they were Gin. above the surface, and some were equipped with mirrors which reflected the lights on the buildings. Where Ignorance is Bliss: The following interesting paragraph appeared in .Friday’s issue of our Whakatane’s contemporary: The strength of the territorial unit in Whakatane is now 53 of all ranks, and a steady approach is being made to the hoped-for establishment of 125. The great need in Whakatane is for a drill hall, those connected with the movement say. and they add that Opotiki, ironically enough, has a drill hall and no soldiers, white Whakatane has soldiers and no drill hall. The men are showing considerable keenness in their training and the new recruits are coming along well. At piesent the Mounted Rifles are in camp. Gisborne Land Board. The agenda for Friday’s meeting of the Gisborne Land Hoard was brief, only three items of public business being transacted. Lc.t 1 of section 4. block VII I, Waioeka survey district, of an area of 600 acres, was withdrawn from selection under section 15G of the Land Act 1924. A schedule of accrued thirds, with proposals for their expenditure, was submitted by tlie Opotiki County Council, and approved by the. board, which gave authority to the received of land revenue to pay the sum involved, £lB ISs- 4d. A temporary tenancy of section 1, block XXII, Waiau‘survey district, of an area of IU2I acres, was granted at a rental of £lO per annum. Fell Down Mine Shaft. A Hokitika butcher lost four good fat bullocks down an old mine shaft last week. - Six beasts were being driven to the abattoir to be . killed, but when they were on the highway near Kanieri they took fright at two cyclists. The bullocks crashed through a nearby fence on to some old goldmine workings. Four of them fell down an okli mine shaft about 80ft. deep. Two were killed instantly and two bad to be shot. They were a severe loss to their owner, Mr. F. J. Andrews. Bearded Sailors. Identification of 10 of the New Zealand ratings who returned in H.AI.S. Achilles was made difficult for tlieir relatives bv the fact that on the voyage they had grown boards. Some were brown, others black and a few golden, but all had been grown strictly to regulation, which does not- permit) only moustaches, but insists upon full beards or nothing. Permission has also to be obtained before the beard is grown. Obituary. --- The legal profession on V. ednosday evening lost one of its most prominent representatives in the Gisborne district. in the person of Air. Stanley Vivian Beatifoy. whose death -tellowed n collapse at- bis home in Stout street. Air. Bennfoy had been'in poor health for- some months, and though Iris death came as a great shock to his family and many friends, it was known that a collapse such as led) to his demise was i#.t unlikely. Deceased was 'well-known over the whole of the East Const district, including Opotiki and YVr.iroa.
