FLOWER SHOW
OUTSTANDING SUCCESS GOOD VEGETABLE’ AND FRUIT DISPLAY The third quarterly flower show, held undlgr the auspices of thei Opotiki ancl District Horticultural Society ivhs held in the Parish Hall om Tuesday night and again proved, a me si successful function. The hall presented -a gay spectacle and the quality of the blooms was well above standard. At a time when flowers generally are very scarce, the number and variety of "the exhibits was a surprise to many people, and showed thati gardening is progressing in tile district-. The ‘ vegetable and fruit display was the largest seen at an Opotiki flower siiow for many years, taking np the whole side of the hall. The exhibits were of a very good standard’ for the late season. 11l the flower section, the chrysanthemums held pride c-f place as the leading autumn flower and some line specimens were shown, considering the inclement weather some time ago which caused a good deal of damage to gardens. The dahlia section was small, as . was to be expected for so late in the season, blit the blooms exhibited! were surprisingly good, with full centres. Splendid specimens were staged botli in the cut- flower and decorative sections, while the native shrub section proved very interesting. Mrs. Alaxwell put in a. very large display of native shrubs and was higii|y complimented. Airs. Parkinson’s exhibit of looted shrubs was also very favourably commented on. An attractive display was staged by the De Luxe Florists.
The society’s president-, Air. J. D. Clark, complimented members on the results of their efforts and accepted a shouldler spray on behalf of Airs. Clark. Presentations were also made to the president and Air. Lisk (secretary). ’The prize list is as follows: — Chrysanthemums. Steward, Air. Oias. Reid. Three varieties : Aliss 1. Reece 1 and 2, Airs.
