WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WASGTAHI MONTHLY MEETINC The monthly meeting of the W aiotalu Women’s Institute was held on May 10th., Miss M. Du Pont-et presiding over a good attendance. A lull report on the annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Federation was given by Mrs. J. M. Scott. A letter was received from the Mayor, asking for nominations ior tuo Opotiki Centennial Committee, and Mrs. Wagner and Miss AT. Du Poutet were appointed to represent the AYaiotalii Institute. it was decided to authorise Airs. L. V. Looney, link correspondent. to form a link' with the Wriugton Institute. Se-metset. England, from which a most interesting letter had been received. It being members’ day, Airs. Burke acted as convener for the. afternoon, and a very good programme was presented. Two songs by Mrs. C. W hite, : 'To a Miniature” and .“A Bowl of ilo.se-*'. were much appreciated. Mrs. S. Newton demonstrated silk crocheted (rat-hangers and Airs. Cunningham displayed beautiful baskets made of rau-po and maize husk, and showed how to -make them. Both demonstrations were very interesting and a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. A competition, arranged by .Miss M. White, caused much amusement-, and was won by Sirs. Logan. A memory competition for the committee only, was won by Airs. I’. Looney. Mrs. D. C. Forbes and Miss D. Alc-oro. members who are leaving the district, were presented with Institute spoons with thet good wishes of all members, the president expressing regret at their departure. Dainty posies made by members of the Gardening C. sre It* were also presented to Mrs. Forbes and Miss Moore. The monthly competitions resulted as follows : Best Bloom: Airs. Snell 1, Mrs. Newton 2. Best Vegetable: Ales dames Snell and Burke (tie) 1, Alesdarnos Johnson and AV. L. Looney (tie) 2. Bowl for Effect: Mrs. Newton 1, Airs. Wilson 2.’ A special competition for best- collection of articles made from demonstrations during the year was won by Airs. Burke, with Airs. Newton second. Afternoon tea was served by Alosdaifees L. Looney. W. L. Looney, White and Burke. The singing of the National Anthem brought- the aftorricoin to a close.
