YOUNG FARMERS CLUB
INTERESTING MEETING HELPFUL DISCUSSIONS The monthly meeting of the Opotiki Young Farmers’ Club was held in St. John’s Hall oil Monday night, when a large number of members was present. Mr. Eric Thompson occupied the chair. Arrangements f6r the forthcoming tour which embraces a trip by bub through the Northland districts, going as far as Kaitaia, were finalised. The party will proceed as far as AVliangarei, then up > the east coast, returning via the west coast route. Final arrangements were made for the club’s participation in the Bay of Plenty Young Farmers’ court, at the Waikato Winter Show. Entries of produce grown in the district were readily forthcoming. These are to he collected and left- with the club’s president, Mr. D. G. Beattie not later than the 17th. of the present month.. The club secretary, Air. D. Gilmore, presented a lengthy and informative report to the meeting of the district provincial committee meeting held recently at AVaimana. The club president ail'd also the chairman tof delegates, with the secretary to the conference, endorsing the secretary’s report and matters arising therefrom. Arrangements for next month’s club, meeting as suggested by the club’s executive mot with the approval of those present. Following the usual business of the club, Air. Thompson vacated the chair calling on the president to coiL duct the main portion of the evening’s programme, consisting of impromptu, addresses. This rather unusual procedure adding much of interest to the meeting. The president selected) at random members of tbe club and! chose their subject for them, placed a time limit on each speaker, the members entering into the discussions wholeheartedly. Each speaker had to answer questions put by members in the audience.. The following were the speakers and the subjects taken:—Air E. Thompson, “Lucerne cultivation as practised, oh the flat land. Air. J. Beattie, “Lucerne cultivation and methods adopted, in harvesting in the AA’eodland's district.” Air. B. Gilmore, “The value of the tractor on the farm and its general, uses.” Air. AY. Armstrong, “Ploughing and the handling of ploughs.” Air. T. Clarke, “The Cultivation of maize and swede turnip.s as applied in farming hill country.” Mr. R. Stuart,, who hails from Bengal, India, gave a very interesting talk on-farming prac-‘ tices and methods practised there. Question time revealed the interest ef members in farming' in that part of the world. Messrs. R. and G. Bennett handled their subjects in a very capable manner, one taking as liis subject “Poultry keeping as applied to poultry raising” and the latter taking “The value) of keeping ducks on the farm as an adjunct to dairy-farming, generally”. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair, on. the motion of the club chairman, Air. EL Thompson. Alembers are looking forward to, next, month’s meeting, an interesting meeting having been assured.
