PAYNE A pleasant function took place at the nigh School on Friday afternoon, wjicu members of the school committee, the teaching staff, parents and pupils gathered to bid farewell to Mr. ana Airs. A. El. Payne, who are leaving Opotiki to take up their residence ju Otane, Hawke’s Bay. A beautiful bouquet of chrysanthemums was presented to Airs. Payne by a pupil of the school.

Lhe headmaster, Air. A. S. de Alontalk referred t o i Air. Payne’s long services to the school as chairman of the committee and said his services would be a lasting monument in the minds of tiie children, net in the old school, but in the new school which they hoped to get. iter. A. C. Hampton, chairman of Die committee, said he was very sorry to have to take over the position of chairman, as Mr. Payne had served well and faithfully and ha could never wish to. work under a better chairman. He called upon Air. Payne to accept a cheque as a gift from fhose present. Air. Payne said that he was very sorry to have to* leave Opotiki. tie had enjoyed being on the committee and to work with such a line body of teachers. Ah. de Montalk asked Air. Payne, as a last service, to present the* swimming certificates to the pupils. The singing of ‘For They are Jolly Good Fellows” and three hearty cheers concluded the function.

DANCE IN WAIOEKA HALL A dance >vas held in Hail on Friday night. whehv-li|feDoug-all’s Hot Scois Band made its bow to the public. That the music was appreciated is evidenced by the enthusiasm of those who attended the function. An extra was played by -Miss D. Young, while the- duties cl 31. C. were carried our- by Mr. 1. Ban.
