PROPOSED NEW HIGHWAY
WHA KATANE-OPOTIKI ' ROUTE Thu following letter from Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, has been received by the member for the district, Air. A. G. Hultquist, relative to tlie proposed new WhakataneOpotiki highway. I have to. acknowledge receipt of the letter dated 10th. January from the secretary of the Wainui-Waiuga-rara Settlers’ Association, which was. forwarded through you to me for information as to the progress of the highway via Ohope beach. A copy of the above letter was received direct from Mr. Robinson, and lie is being advised in similar terms to this letter. I understand that you discussed the matter deviation with Mr. Newnham, Inspecting Elnginecr, when you were in Wellington recently; The position with regard to the survey work is that, with the limited staff available, progress has not been as rapid as was anticipated, and with the number of other urgent works in hand it lias not been possible, to allocate additional staff to this survey. However, investigations are in hand, and as soon as the results of the survey are available, - further consideration will be given to the proposal.
