OTARA MONTHLY MEETING • ’ • ■ : _.’vv • 1 ■ w v : v . v.. The April meeting of the Otara Women’s Institute was held yesterday in the. Otara Hall, the chair being occupied by Airs. AY. Gault. After the usual song and Creed, business was dealt with. it was' unanimously agreed that- the regular meeting day be changed to the first . Tuesday in the month, at 1.4|5 p.in., ALay, July and September toi be the evening meetings. As it. was members’ afterneon, the president then -vacated the chair, and Alt's.* E. Young and Aiiss Neilson took charge oil; the programme; The Roll Call, “A Good Turn I Have Appreciated” proved that members have good memories. Airs. J. Thompson gave a much appreciated humorous reading. A waltzing competition was won by Airs. Bingham and Al'rs. Jones, who also won a stepping race. Other competitions were won by Airs. Pinnignr, Airs. AYiliiams and Airs. Jack Young. A hearty vote of thanks was -passed to the convenors of the programme. In the floating howl competition, Airs. S. Parkinson was first and Airs. Earp second. Tomato Relish : Airs. Jack Young 1, Aiiss Butler 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were AI os-dames Gault, A. "McCall ion and A lass Butler. The singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon te. a close. OPOTIKI MONTHLY MEETING The president. Airs. J. Thompson, presided over a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Women's Institute. The Institute song was sung and the Creed repeated. An invitation to members to attend the birthday party of the Te Kalia Institute was received. Airs. F'ox and Airs. T. Thompson were appointed delegates ot attend the Federation meeting. T,lic desirability or otherwise of holding a Sunshine League Court- was fully discussed. Alany suggestions were made bv members, including one that the Court be ai floral one. Owing to lack of time this year the suggestion was referred to the committee of the Sunshine League for the future. Mention 'was made of the “Pioneer’s Afternoon” -which is to be held on the 18th. April, and arrangements are well in hand for that function. Points prize for needlework was presented to Airs. Alii lor, who has gained most points in competitions held during the year. There* was one new member. Airs. R. Smith. The evening’s programme having been arranged by members, Airs. Thompson vacated the chair in favour of Airs. Bridge. Posies made <l>y Airs. Beattie and Aiiss Bridge were presented to tlie president, All's. J. Thompson, the secretary. Aiiss N. Neilson, and to the treasurer, AJiss AI. Sydenham. Alusical items included n, pianoforte solo by Aiiss Elsa Abbot, who played “11 Bacio” and a jig; a trio by Alisses L. and R. Baird and Alaster James Baird, their items being “Spring Song” and “Killarney”. Airs. Gault’s anmising reading "was entitled “Blanchards Trousers”. A very interesting and instructive address was then given by Aiiss J. AJountjoy, her subject being “loeth”. Miss Albuntjoy explained the School dental system, how it came into operation, the dlifficulties encountered by the first trainees, and the rapid progress made during the last few years. AYitli the help‘of a diagram, Miss Alountjoy showed the construction of a tooth, and pointed out how necessary it is «tliat care should be taken of “baby” teeth. This address was very much appreciated by members. A bouquet was presented to Aiiss Ferguson who is leaving the district. Supper was then served by the hostesses, Alesdames El. Young. \Yoodsidte and Baird. Airs. Gault spoke briefly of the drama- festival to be held in June. A competition arranged by Airs. Beattie was won by Airs. H. Rowland. The flower competition “Best Flower in Ao.ur Garden” was won by Airs. Jeffery, with Airs. Beattie second.
