W AIU O A’S PR OG R A MATE ESTIMATED COST OF £6OOO A report and estimate of the cost of the sealing of the remaining streets in the borough was furnished by the engineer, Air. A. Cl Twyford, at the monthly meeting of the Wairoa borough Council. The Mayor, Air. H. Li. Marker, stated that the total cost for the borough’s street- sealing programme- would bo £6OOO, and the work tvouldl have to he done in two “bites,” of £3OOO each year. He was of opinion that the opportunity should he taken to put the question before the ratepayers so that the necessary formation work could he done. The interest and the sinking fund over a. 10-year period would be approximately! £7OO a year. The council should take authority for the full £6OOO loan, £'3ooo for the coming year and another loan of £3,CCO for the second year. The Mayor then moved that- the motions necessary in making application to the Local Bodies Loan Board and taking a poll of ratepayers he passed, the motion being seconded by Cr. J. B. Cook;. “I consider it an economical tiling to .do,” stated) Cr. AL J. Gemmed in expressing his favour with- the motion. The view that the council was laying the streets with bitumen, but no provision was being made for the people as far as footpaths were concerned was taken by Cr. A. W. Archibald. “That is absolutely true in the back streets.” stated Cr. J. 0. Scott, who added that of the two he would rather see the roads done. It was more economical. “We should not- lose sight- of the footpaths,” stated Or. W. H. Brady. , The Mayor pointed out that with footpaths it meant the kerbing and channelling as well, which was a heavy proposition. * The Mayor’s motion was carried.
