OPOTIKI BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING STREET COWS TO “GO” DECISION BY COUNCIL The monthly meeting, of the Opot-i----ki Borough Council was held in the borough chambers' last night. Present: the Mayor (Air. G. S'. Moody), Councillors G. L. Day, T. G. Johnson, S. E. Webb, P. J. Short, A. G. Stevenson, F. W. Biridger, C. D. Brown, and Air. W.« H„ Briggs (town clerk). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. Accounts : were passed for payment as follows: District Fund Account, £672 12s- 3d; Wharf Account, £2)24 os 7d; Domain Board Account, £2 18s od. Bank balances were shown as follows: District Fund (dr.), £lOOl 10s 2d; Wharf Account (cr..) £485 Is; Domain Board (cr.), £24 Os 3d!.

A number of questions were asked in connection with accounts in connection with the recent Licensing Committee election. Bird Sanctuary. —Tlie Department of Internal Affairs, wrote stating that the catchment area fer the borough water supply had been Gazetted a game sanctuary and enclosed Gazette notice.—The council decided to advertise prior to the shooting season. Thanks.—Tliei secretary of the Physical Fitness Committee, wrote, expressing thanks for the support given by the council during the recent campaign.

The secretary of the Bey Scouts’ Committee, also wrote, thanking the council for granting the use of the bandroom for one night each week. Cemetery Plot.—A letter was received from the secretary of the Opotiki Returned Soldiers’ Association suggesting- that a special plot be provided at the -new cemetery for the burial of Returned Soldiers.—The secretary, Air. C. D. Brown, waited on the council in support of the letter and explained the Association’s viewpoint.— The council considered the request a very reasonable one and it was. decided to allocate a plot in a good positioit. Hospital Board Member.—A letter was received from the secretary of the Opotiki Hospital Board, notifying the council of the resignation"of Air. Chas. H. Fleming as a borough representative.—Or. Stevenson moved, and Ci. Webb seconded, that Air. J. D. Clark be appointed as borough representative. The motion v. as carried. - Alotor M'ower.—Particulars of a motor mower were forwarded 1 by Alanning and Co.—lt was decided to file particulars. Hauling-out Ground.—The Opotiki Y acht Club wrote asking for the use of the area north of the stock yard at the wharf, for use as a hauling-out ground.—it was decided to grant the request and to make a charge of 10s annually. Alembers of the council considered the club was performing a good service and should 1 be encouraged.

Nuisance at Grandstand.—The Opetiki Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club wrote thanking the council for the manner in which the grounds had been cured for by the council. It- was stated that trouble had been experienced at the grandstand.—Councillors stated that the netting, at the. foot of the stand was being continually broken and the club’s gear interfered with. It was decided to leave the matter of suitable repairs in the hands of the borough foreman and Or. Webb.

Taxi Control.—A letter was received from the Municipal: Association in connection with the control of taxis and town carriers.—lt was decided to support the Association’s stand that control should remain in the hands of the local authorities.

Taxi Phone.—An application for a taxi ’phone was received from Alessrs. Lovell Bros., the request being for a ’phone to he attached to a verandah post or telegraph pole.—lt was decided toi reply stating that the council would consider the matter of a telephone for the use of all taxis. An Award.—The Department of Labour wrote in connection with payment to concrete workers, and asked that the matter of arrears be attended to.—The council decided to write to the Alunicipal Association’s solicitor in connection with matters dealing with the award. The works committee’s report, inspector’s report, and health inspector’s report, were approved. Notice of Motion.—ln • accordance with liis notice ■of motion, Cr. Short moved that tlie minute dealing with the appointment of committees be re-

scincled and that the council be a general purposes committee. Seconded by Cr. Day and carried. Cow Collars.—Alter a general discussion on the position in connection, with the issue of cow collars, thecouncil resolved that at the end of six. months, no cows he allowed to' grazecn the streets. The meeting was then adjourned until Tuesday next, when the loan proposals will be dealt with.
