Opotiki Hunt Club. «: The annual meeting of the Opotiki Hunt Club will be held in the 11.5. A. room on "Wednesday next-, commencing at 8 o’clock. Octopus. An interesting exhibit at the Opotiki school last week was a- small octopus which was found by boys in a pool at the beach. Broken Leg. As the result of an accident, Mrs. McGivern, of Waiawa, was admitted to the Opotiki hospital yesterday, suffering from a broken leg. Temperatures. Temperatures, on Saturday at various North Island centres were: Auckland 64 degrees, Tauranga' 66, Opotiki 65, Gisborne 63, Napier 65, and Wellington 62. A Fish Tale! During the week-end a party of local fishermen enjoyed a fishing trip to Wailiau Bay; One of the party claims to have had the luck to hook a 10 ft. hiako shark, which unfortunatey got away before it could be landed. Just another fish story! Courthouse Croundls. 'The beautiful appearance of the grounds surrounding the Opotiki Courthouse has been the subject of comment on all sides. The garden which is cared for by Mr. A. El. Johnson, clerk of the court, would certainly be a credit to any home. Air M£'il for Opotiki. The first air mail between Auckland and Opotiki arrived in Opotiki this morning, and was sorted shortly after arrival. Mail was also despatched to Gisborne from the local Post Office, the closing time being. 9 a;in. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Air mail for Auckland closes at 7.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and! Saturday. The postage rate is 2d per ounce for letters, -and the rates l'er parcels may be obtained on application at the Post Office counter. Special stamps are not required.
Equinox. The occurrence of the autumnal equinox to-morrow marks the passing of the summer season. Although the meteorological season cannot he fixed in advance with any certainty, it has been found that in most localities the actual season coincides fairly closely with the calendar season, which is arbitrarily attachedl to the occurrence of equinoxes and solstices. The sun has been to the south of trie equator during the past six months, lnit at midnight to-morrow it will cross the equator and enter the Northern Hemisphere. Removal of Obstacles. Before the air service to Opotiki could Commence it was necessary to remove the Domain Board’s house from its former position in the centre of the southern boundary of the aerodrome to a position near the entrance gate. The work was undertaken on Friday by the Public Works Department, power poles being used as skidts. Six trucl/s were used to remove the house to its present position. Workmen were busily engaged this morning dismantling the power poles which ran along the western boundary of the aerodrome. The power line has been moved hack to a safe distance from the aerodrome on both the southern and western sides.
