ANNUAL MEETING HELD OPOTIKI-TAN EAT UA HIGHAVAY REQUEST FOR IAIPROYEAIEXT Tlie annual meeting of the Gpotiki Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held in the Band Room on Friday night, the c-hair being occupied by the president. Mr. T. G. Johnson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary (Airs. T. Bcdman) antii ccnfirined. The treasurer presented the balancesheet which .showed a small credit balance. Several questions were asked and answered satisfactorily. Before retiring from the chair, the president thanked these who had worked with him and especially the members of the. Committee. They had had a strenuous 12 months’ work in connection with the election and it had been a credit to them. If. it had; not been 'for the effort they had put forward they would not have had a Labour representative for the Bay of Plenty. Mr. Jim Shaw was then voted to the chair and called for nominations for the position of president. Officers. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:— President, Al'r. T. C 4. Johnson (reelected). Vice-presidents, Messrs Jim Shaw and A. Ale Donald. Secretary. Airs. T. Bodnian. Executive Committee. Officers and Mr. L. Clark. Airs. Ball. Messrs. Les. Abbot. Holiday and .0. I. Hansen. Auditor. Mr. J. T. Roe (re-elected). Air. Johnson resumed the chair at this stage and thanked members for the confidence they bad again placed in him and said he would continue to do his best for the branch and; party. The annual subscription was fixed at 2/0. It was decided to have the opening night of the AY.E.A. on 31st. March. Air. Holliday referred to the bad state of the district roads and considered something should Ire done immediately. Several oilier speakers expressed dissatisfaction with the poor state of the Opotild-Taneatua road., it being pointed out that maintenance in the AA'liakatane Comity was much better than on the Gpotiki side ol the boundary. .During the discussion it was stated that the road should be sealed from Taneatua to Opotiki. The president pointed out that the Government had a five-year plan and it was impossible to do all the roads at the same time. Mr. Abbot considered that the maintenance at' present was inadequate and contended'that another road ran•diine would bring the surface up to a rea sou able standard. After further discussion it was decided. to approach the authorities with a . request that another road machine should he put on the Gpotiki section immediately.
