Healthy sea Inezes encourage the Northland gumlands to set a standard in large families which, if followed by the rest of the country, would solve the birthrate problem in New Zealand. Within a short distance of the pretty farming district of Wniharara, there is one family of 17 and another of 18. Temperatures. Temperatures throughout the North Island were modlerate at 9 ’a.in. on Saturday, Tauranga and East- Capo being the only stations to record 70 degrees or more, and Cape Maria, Auckland, and Opotiki returning 09 degrees. Napier recorded 00 degrees, and Capo Pallisor 59, Gisborne being the lowest return but one, with 58 degrees. Low Rainfall. The rainfall in Opotiki district during the week-end was only moderate 22 points being recorded in the borough for flic 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. yesterday. ' Rain has fallen on three days this month, but the total is only 34 points. Gisborne has also- experienced a meagre rainfall, only 28‘ points having fallen this month up to 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Copper Deposits. None of the many copper deposits in New Zealand lias proved el commercial value, and the chances of those known are not promising, according tc Dr. J. Henderson, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. In an article in the. Journal of Science and Technology. Dr. Henderson states t\iat by far the greater part of the total production of ore. amounting to 5032 tons, was mined more than 70 years ago. Only a. lew tons have' been extracted during the present century, though a good deal of prospectings has been done.
