SHELLS FROM TUTAMOE
3307 FT. ABOVE SEA GISBORNE SCHOOL DISPLAY The publication recently oi a message from Wellington relating to the discovery of fossilised shells at an altitude of 2000 ft. in the Ruahino ranges lias directed attention to the existence oi bands of rock containing fossilised shells at much higher altitudes in Poverty Ray. At the Gisborne Central School tlieie is an exhibit of such shells brought from near the summit of Tutamoo, 3307 ft., in the Waipaoa area, inland from Tolaga. Bay. The exhibit was presented) to the school by -Mr. A. F. Rowley, who chipped it from a boulder on Tutamoe, the boulder weighing- several tons. The late Mr. S. W. S. Strong, then resident in the uistrict, designated the i'ossi as of the lower tertiary period, dating hack many millions of years. 'Pile weight of the rock from which it was taken discounted completely anv tlieory that human agency had placed it in its present position.
