A Dragon; in Gisborne? A Chinese dragon made its iirst appearance in Gladstone road. Gisborne on Saturday evening in the procession starting from the Post Office and' leading to the Tihirtv Thousand Club’s carnival at. the Waikanae beach. The monster was made in Gisborne, for the local celebrations in the Coronation year, but was ncit used owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic. The dragon was designed by Mr. Bill Fong, and seme of the materials used were specially imported from China. It weighs oewt., is 66ft-. long, and 71t. high. The inside frame is in seven sections and is. constructed of imported cane. The head, tail, and' outer covering were all pierced together at Makaraka by 12 Chinese under the supervision of Mr. Fong. The' leader walked in front of the dragon and was followed by nine men carrying the sections and manipulating the movements from inside. Mr. Fong gained his experience in the construction of dragons in Australia and considers that tho Gisborne dragon up to standard in every wav.
