TO THE EDITOR
OPOTIKI MAIN HIGHWAYS Sir, —1 was very pleased to see in the report of the last meeting of the Opotiki County Council that notice is being taken of the shocking condition of the main highways in this district. A considerable amount of propaganda is being-circulated urging motorists to take care and thus obviate accidents, but it appears to me that these responsible for the issue of such propaganda" should themselves take the precaution to make the roads safe for motorists to travel on. At the present time, drivers of small cars are in constant dread of being involved' in serious accidents. The state of the roads makes it almost impossible for such ears to hold the.road and there have been numerous cases of capsizes, fortunately without serious injury to the occupants of the cars. Since Christmas I have travelled over a great portion of the roads in tbc North Island, and my opinion is endorsed by others who have likewise travelled, namely, that the roads in this district are the worst in New Zealand. How is it that in most other districts the main highways are tar sealed, but that in the Whakatanc and Opotiki districts tar sealing is eon.spicuous by its .absence P It is time that the residents of this district asserted themselves to insist that roads fit to travel on he provided. SAFETY FIRST.
