OPOTIKI BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING COWS ON HIGHWAYS COMPLAINT FROM BOARD Tile monthly meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council was held in the Borough Chambers last night. Presentthe Mayor (Mir. G. S. Moody), Councillors F. J. Short, A. G. Stevenson, C. J). Brown, G. L. Day, T. G. Johnson, Su El. Webb and Mr. W. H. Briggs (town clerk). The minutes of tile previous meeting were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. Accounts were -passed for payment as follows : District Fund £ ICO IBs 3d, Wharf £369 Is 4d, Domain Board £B> 17s 4d. Bank balances were shown as follows: District Fund (dr.) ,£IBS2 9s, Wharf (or.) £726 IBs, Domain Board (dr.) £24 8s od.

By-laws.—The Waitara. Borough Council wrote in connection with preparation of by-laws and stated that the cost when printed would be £2OO. It was suggested that the Opotiki Borough Council should support a request that the Government should prepare model by-laws.—Councillors considered that slich a. request would -probably only involve the Opotiki Borough in unnecessary expenditure. It was-decided to reply stating that the Council was not in favour of the suggestion.

Water Rates.-—The Pahiatua Borough > Council forwarded particulars in connection with a proposed remit re water supply rating, pointing out the unfairness of the -present rating system. and stating that the burden fell mainly oil the business areas.—Cr. Johnson said that Opotiki had a satisfactory system and it did not cost- anything like. 20 per cent, of the revenue to collect the charges as stated in the letter.—Other councillors supported Cr. Johnson’s opinion and it was decided to reply stating the council was not in favour of the proposed remit. Fse of Room.—A request was received' from the Scout Committee asking that the Cub mistress should 1 have the use of the bandroom free on Monday nights.—The request- was granted. Offer of Donation The Opotiki County Council wrote stating the council’s willingness to contribute £SO towards the erection of Plunket and Rest Rooms.—lt was resolved to reply thanking the County Council for its offer.

Centennial Celebrations.—The Auckland Centennial Committee wrote asking that the matter of a, contribution to the funds he decided at an early date.— It was decided! to defer final consideration until a meeting is called by the Mayor in connection with local activities.

Another letter on the same subject was received f rom the Mayor of Tauranga who referred to the list of dates for celebrations in various Bay towns. Tin- Letter also stated that £3OOO would he available for subsidies for tin* Bay.—Decision was deferred.

Plan.—A sub-division plan was referred to the eoinicil for approval. The area concerned is of .‘LJ- acres and veil! be utilised for the erection of additional State houses in-Opotiki. there being provision, for twelve houses, including one double-unit building.— The. plan was approved. Straying Cattle. —Mr. Ronayne, of the P.W.D., Tauranga wrote stating that complaints had been made about cows being allowed on the main highways in the borough and asking the council tot attend to the nuisance.—A

report was also received! from the inspector who stated that'he was keeping the highways clear of cows.— Councillors considered it impossible to keep every cow off the highway.—Cr. Johnson said the time was coming now when cows would have to go' - off the streets. Other councillors agreed with this view and it was decided to consider the issue of further collars at the March meeting of the council. Sign Over Roadway.—An application was received from Mr. Geo. Anderson for permission to erect a neon sign projecting three feet over the roadfway. the applicant stating that the view was obscured from one side by verandas.—The council decided it could not grant such a request. Another letter from M!r. Anderson drew attention to the steepness of the speeial vnter-ta.blo, it being pointed out that motor ears were catching the rear parts on taking the dip.—.lt was decided to refer this question to the foreman. New Stock Route.-—A new by-law-defining the stock routes in the borough was received from Messrs. Potts (Continued on Page 4)'
