WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
OTARA MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otaru Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday, 14th. February in the Otara Hall. The president. Airs. A. J. iYleCallion, occupied the chair.
An interesting programme followed the usual business. The roll call “Sing, say. whistle el* pay” caused much amusement. Two vocal solos rendered by Mrs. 0. Black were much appreciated. Cl ho demonstration “How to make wire' baskets” was given by Mrs. Merry. The monthly -dower competition—three best dahlias, decorative class—resulted: Aliss Neilson 1, Airs. Bingham 2. veaetus class: Airs. Eaip I. Airs. Karp 2. The competition for home-made soap was won by All's. Ear]). The annual collection ol potatoes grown hv members was also displayed. These were grown from three seed potatoes, the highest yield being by Mrs. AfcKillop with 28lbs. Airs. C. Savage with 24lbs. and Aliss Butler with 2libs, were 2nd. and 3rd. respectively. Tlie total weight of all potatoes grown was 2oolbs. A dlainty afternoon tea was served by Ai!rs. E. Young, Alls. C. Black and Miss K. Lambert. Prior to the close ol the meeting. Alas. Alt-Cull ion in sympathetic: reference to'the loss sustained by Airs. E. A. Medley asked the members to stand in silence. The singing of the 1 National Anthem brought to a close a success! ill and well-attended meeting.
