OPOTIKI ANNUAL SHOW
The Opotiki I\. and P. Association’s 47th. annual show was hold on Friday last in good weather conditions, the day being sunny with the exception of the late afternoon, when the sky became overcast. From a financial point of view the show was a. success, the gate takings being £165; slightly above last year’s figure, which was also a record. There was a very pleasing increase in the chief outdoor exhibits, but the indoor exhibits ngain iSiowed a falling away and wore very disappointing. There is room for a big improvement in the home industries section and this matter should receive the immediate attention of the committee in the way of reorganisation.
The committee was working under a handicap during the day. owing to the indisposition of the secretary. Splendid work was done by the ladies’ committee in looking alter the luncheon and refreshment booths and the returns from this source were very satisfactory.
In the dairy, section. the Jersey breed produced tbc only competition, as was the ease last year and the finality of the animals produced very favourable comment. Many old exhibitors in the sheep section came forward this year and the aecomniodation proved inadequate and) had to he greatly augmented by new pens. A new breed made an appearance in Opotiki lor the first time, this being a fine display by Mr. Starky of Toatoa. This exhibitor was the first farmer to introdr.ee the Hyland breed to the Hay of Plenty and the entries created considerable interest. The sheep are stated to be suitable for all classes of country; and particularly for hilly stations. Among.the entries was a ram that took 3rd. place in the Melbourne Koval Show against all Australia. Another exhibit secured 3rd. prize at the Palmerston North show against all New Zealand. These ranis were beaten out of place at Friday’s sbene by. rains bred by iNIr. Starky, and be was very pleased with the result. The show committee were greatly pleased by the revival ol interest in the sheep section with the greatly increased competition. Competition was also very keen in the pig section, more exhibitors coming forward than for many years. The animals were in fine show condition, and some of the older pigs were very massive. The ring events as usual proved to be the chief source of interest and with a good ground, the exhibition el jumping was particularly good. The steer riding produced plenty of excitement, the majority of the riders re*maining on the beasts till they quietened down. The standard of riding in this class showed an improvement. One or two of the competitors received some hardi knocks but the day ended with a freedom from injury. Trade exhibits were fairly numerous and created keen interest amongst farmers in particular. .The sideshows were popular with the majority ol supporters and were again very mimi rous.
Despite strong efforts by tlie members of tlu* committee it was . found impossible to secure attendants to load the animals in the grand, parade and this important- feature of the show had to ho abandoned. Following is the list- of prize-win-ners
