Flag 500 Tournament. Headers are remindled of the Flag 500 tournament to be held under the auspices of the liebekah Lodge, in the Lyric Hall to-morrow night. Saturday’s Temperatures. North Island temperatures on Saturday at 9 a.m. were as follows: Auckland 62 degrees, Tauranga 65, Opotiki 63, East Cape 69, Gisborne and Napier 71. and Wellington 59.
Auld and Co.’s Sale. Attention is drawn to the advertisement of Messrs. Auld and Co. in to-day’s issue. Owing to the heavy business done last week it lias been found necessary to close the premises for stock-taking on Tuesday night instead of Thursday as previously advertised. Coif Dance.
Numerous attractions at the Opotiki Golf Club’s annual dance to be held in the Woodlands Hall on Wednesday next, include free ice cream and fruit salad. The music will be supplied by Hoy Parkes and his Hhythm Hoys andl a happy time i< anticipated for all who attend. Production Resumed. The unwatering of the hooded Hikurangi coal mine has reached a stage where coal is being hewn for outside sale for the first time since the. mine was hooded in November. When the water has hoen reduced to a normal level a further increase in output will be possible. Heavy Fog in Opotiki. An exceptionally heavy log was experienced in Opotiki this morning. At six o’clock visibility wa.s reduced to about two chains in the borough and traffic lunl to proceed cautiously in the streets. The lag was mostly dispersed by seven o’clock with a bright sky prevailing. it is some considerable time since Opotiki has experienced Such a heavy fog. Kopuawhara Tragedy Anniversary. Vcsterdeay was the first anniversary of the Kopuawhara tragedy, in which 22 lives were lost when a torrent of water. following a night’s deluge, broke loose aiuli swept away No. 4 Camp and a large proportion of these in the path of the; water. Another 1 ito was also lost at the Gisborne end of tin l railway construction works bv the flooding of a camp.
Harbour Mishaps. The lather boisterous and strong wiuti which was experienced cn the water during the 'week-end resulted in .mishaps lor some of the yachting enthusiasts. “Ropoyet” with seven ahoard.. including ladies, had the misfortune to capsize, although the l extent of the damage was an unexpected “dip" for the occupants. -Mr. A. \V. McGregor in “L’Hirondelle” had the unpleasant experience of having the mast completely snapped! off. and Master Trevor Tulhct in “Hurricane” also capsized, hut fortunately without anv dire results.
Waiapu River Fatality. A drowning fatality occurred in the Waiapu River at 2 .45 p.m. on Friday when a party of hoys visited the river for a swim. The victim was Donald Farrow, aged 12, a hall-caste, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Farrow, Gisborne. The lad. who had been living with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Manuel.* Tik.itiki, went with four other hoys to a deep hole near the piles ol the old Tiki tiki bridge, and although he could nut swim was the- iirst to enter the water. When the hoys realised that their companion was in trouble thi'v went for assistance.
