WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

On Saturday, February 11th., the members of the Women's Institute met for another of their pleasant evenings. A huge number oi members were present, and the ball looked particularly gay with the competition flowers, which on this occasion were dahlias and zinnias. Acting as hostesses for the evening were Mrs. J. Gow Murray, Airs. AleCullion, and the- Misses Ft and J. Alurray. A fair amount of business was dealt with, and regrets expressed that it was impossible to help the Blind Institute out with the sale of its handicrafts, which it is usual to dispose of at. the agricultural show. Unfortunately the request came too late to enable arrangements to be made, it was decided to write and ask the Institute to put in an earlier request next year. Airs. Fisher was chosen as a delegate to the Bay of Plenty Federation, the meeting to be held/ in AVlmkatane. A “bring and buy’’ stall for Federation funds, occupied one corner of the hall and brought forth satisfactory results, and was supported by the Dramatic and Gardening Circles. Mrs. Hampton supplied the “Golden Thread” and spoke for a short time on the ‘Balancing of the Budget’ in the home, but as she had a proposal to put before the meeting and the hour was late, the balancing of the budget was deferred to a later date. Her proposal to have a W.L float in the procession at the Physical Fitness Campaign was met- with approval, and arrangements were left in the hands of a sub-committee.

T’be Drama League produced an exceptionally good play reading, and kept the audience at a high tension throughout. The parts were well chosen, and those taking part, threw themselves well into the part allotted to them. 'The play by A. A. Alilno was entitled “Aiiss Alarlow at Home”. The parts allotted were: Aiiss Alarlow, Miss Valerie Thompson; Ester (her secretary), Airs. J. D.. Clark; Ambrose Wallin.gton, Airs. A. Short; Joe Walton, Aiiss Betty Alaxwoll. In the competition for zinnias and dahlias, Airs. Beattie secured first place, and Mrs. Fisher second.

The National Anthem brought a very happy evening to a close.
