AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING AT GISBORNE OPOTIKI ROYS’ SUCCESSES Opotiki athletes who visited Gisborne for the big sports there on Anniversary Day. enjoyed considerable success. The weather throughout * the ■ day was unsettled but this did. not interfere unduly with the running of the events. The attendance was only fair. Heavy rain fell shortly after the start of the events and as a result the fields were reduced somewhat. The presence of teams from Opotiki and Wairoti added interest to the meeting. Gisborne succeeded in. winning the points cup by a fairly substantial margin, securing 110 points, while the Opotiki team gained' second place with 58A- points. Wairoa- registered 17A points.' The rain was sufficient to. rob the track of its spring and jumpers found difficulty in equalling their previoms standards. The winner of the high jump handicap, J.‘ Hutt, had the misfortune to injure his knee. He was making his final attempt, at sft;, and in descending, after failing to clear the liar, caught his foot <»n file, side of the jumping pit, twisting the knee. His~ 19in. handicap was sufficient ter him to win the event.

Aii unusual performance was put nj>by an Opotiki cyclist, Ik Vorcoe. Hocompeted with much success in the e—vents, "winning the one mile senior event from a. handicap of 70yds. and being placed' second in the half-mile from 35yds.
