Race at Matamata. The annual race meeting of the Matamata Racing; Club will be held on Saturday next. Particulars appear in our advertising columns. Moonlight Fun Fair. A reminder is given ot the Moonlight Fun Fair to be held at tlie Vicarage Grbunds on Friday evening. If the weather is unfavourable it has been decided to abandon the Fair and hold a flannel dance in the Parish Hall. Racing Bicycle Smashed. When one of the competitors at the sports meeting on Friday night went tu collect his racing bicycle at the conclusion of the meeting, lie found that a car had run over liis machine which wa,s badly smashed at the rear-end. The driver of the car apparently did not wait to find out the owner of the machine but left the “scene” as soon as possible. Sand on Streets. Cr. G. L. Day suggested at last night’s meeting of the Opotiki .borough Council that sand should be swept off the streets after two or three days when put down to cover soft tar. He remarked that the sand was blown everywhere when left on the streets. ’Pile council decided to refer the matter to the foreman. Child Knocked Over. When a car was hacking out near the grandstand at the reserve on Friday night, a child was knocked over, hut fortunately was not injured. At last night’s meeting: of the Opotiler Borough Council it was decided on the request of Cr. Webb that ears should not he permitted to park alongside the gateway and that posts with parking notices he erected on both sides to the ground entrance.

Collision at Te Teko. Severe cuts from flying glass were received! by the occupants of two cars which collided oil the intersection of tin' Botorua - Whakatane - Edgecombe roads at To Teko on -Monday a Iternoon. Those more seriously injured were: Mrs. Ngaio, Te Teko. passenger in one car, deep scalp wound, and compound fracture of the nasal bones ; \Y. Nurrcll, of Frankton driver of the other car, bad cut on hand and arm; and Airs. \Y. T. Ihirrett. Opotiki, passenger in Nurrell’s car, deep forehead wound’.

Yacht Race. The yacht race held in the Opotiki river en Monday attracted a crowd of about 100 spectators despite the unfavourable weather conditions. The race was won by “Wee Pat” (Mr. X. T. Hill) in 1 hour 5 minutes. “Id Hi rondel lo’’ (Mr. McGregor) was second, being only 30 seconds behind tlie winner, while “Flying Cloud ’ (Master F. Talbot) was third, covering the course in 1 hour 9 minutes. A lull description ol the race will appear in Friday’s issue ol the Xews. Collision at Waiotahi. „ A collision between a truck 'driven by Mr. S. 'Biddle, of Waimana, and a car driven by Mr. B. Newell, ol Opotiki.to Waimana, while the car was near the Waiotahi beach on Thursday. The truck was proceeding from Opotiki to Waiman. while the car was travelling in the opposite direction, the two vehicles meeting at a narrow spot on the road. Mr. \\ . Newell, a passenger in the ear, received a bruised anil, while the right hand side of each vehicle was badly damaged.

A Cold Spell. Mouday outings were completely spoiled in Gpotiki on Monday, when a very cold wind accompanied a steady drizzle throughout the day. 'I he wind in some parts of the district on Sunday night reached gale force. Conditions yesterday were very sultry with further rain. The raj nlall on. Monday was .44in.. yesterday’s fall was .oiiu., while .ooin. was recorded for the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. to-day. The total for the three days is l.SOin. The rainfall in. Gisborne was lighter than in Opotiki, but the fall on the hills between Opotiki and Gisborne was fairly heavy.

Sports on Friday. A full programme of events, including those for children, will ho held at the sports meeting on Friday night. Owing to the hnndicappers being absent in Gisborne, handicaps will not be available until Friday. Boy’s Foot Gashed. A sou of ’Mr. Peru Christie, while playing at the landing at the northern end of the camping ground on Sunday received a severe gash to one of his feet through stepping on a broken bottle. The hoy was taken away in a taxi and received medical attention. Presentation. At the conclusion of the sports meeting on Friday night last. Air. Chas Tabb, oil 'behalf of the Athletic C'Hid) made a presentation to Mr. B. Anderson, who has Jolt Opotiki for Training College. Mr Tabb referred to Air. Anderson’s assistance to the club as an official and also, as a competitor and wished him the best of luck.
