■‘LET GEORGE DO IT” Everybody enjoys a good hearty laugh, and we can guarantee you laughs you’ll really enjoy and long remember at the De Luxe Theatre to-night in Cinesound’s riotously funny comedy, “Let George Do It,” starring George AAAllace and a great team of comedians, headed by Jce Valli, Letty CravdoQi, Alec Kellaway, George Lloyd and Harry Abdy. Made for laughing purposes only, “Let George Do It” has already enjoyed tremendous success and popularity in the cities and* we unhesitatingly recommend it as the funniest film in years. The limitless laughs are punctuated with real thrills when a racing speed boat runs riot with AVallace and Letty Craydon on Sydney Harbour. Further enhancing the entertainment value of the film is the fact that it is ideal for the whole family. “LETTER OF INTRODUCTION” Noted for his great and moving tragedies of the screen, John M. Stahl has turned his talents comedywards.
-MorS comedy than he has inserted in his past half-dozen productions is included in his latest, “Letter of introduction,” scheduled to be shown at the De Luxe Theatre Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. While this picture contains all the stirring heartpull, dramatic-punch and glowing romance of liis former screen masterpieces. the prominent role played by Charlie McCarthy in the cast accounts for the preponderance of laughs in this production.
Heading the cast are Adolphe Menjou, Andrea Leeds, Edgar Bergen with the inimitable Charlie McCarthy, and George Murphy. As the story embraces incidents in Bergen’s rise to fame with McCarthy, excellent comedy opportunities were offered in its development. Because of the unique style of comedy employed by Bergen and Charlie, most of the incidents dealing with the pair, and practically all of the dialogue between the two, was written by Bergen, recognised as a. master comedy constructionist and writer. The story presents Bergen as a struggling ventriloquist-/ who, through meeting Menjou, is started on liis road to success and fame. The BergenMcCarthy sequences will include his appearances in swanky New York night clubs, liis gradual rise to fame, and his ultimate success in radio. other comedy sequences, between Menjou, Murphy, Andrea Leeds, Rita Johnson and Lve Arden, are spotted through the production. Stalil is known for liis direction of such pictures as .“Back Street,” “Magnificent Obsession,” “imitation of Life”—all with fairly heavy dramatic, even tragic, themes. “Letter of introduction” marks his departure into a new field of directional endeavour.
