ARCTIC MUMPS FATAL

ESKIMO' DEATH ROLL OTTAWA, Dec. I.—A mysterious disease brought' swift death to Eskimos, on Baffin Island 1 , north-east -of the Canadian mainland in the Arctic. After the ailment was fatal to 70 in. five years in a population of 1000 itwas diagnosed by Government physicians as mumps. This year’s Arctic patrol of tlie Government steamer Nascopie gave medical officers an opportunity of observing the disease. It was discovered the natives had treated many cases by opening the neck with a knife and. the attempted cure was more fatal than tlie disease. The natives were instructed that when any are stricken they must remain in their sleeping bags and use. compresses instead of the knife.
