FRIDAY NICHT’S MEETING MANY CLOSE FINISHES The Opotiki Amateur Athletic and. Cycling Club resumed activities after the holidays oil Friday night, when a. very successful meeting was held. A. number of very close finishes added, to the. interest of the meeting, while the resumption of the ladies’ sprint was also a pleasing feature, the competitors in this class slio'wing good, promise. Very good time was made in the senior 88b yards handicap, thepace being very fast in the first lap, resulting in the splendid time of 2m.. Bsec. being recorded by tbe winner, despite a stiff breeze against the runners coming up the straight. Upton off scratch was Juuuly at the finish, securing, (third place and recording. 2min. 9sec. for the distance—a very good performance for night running, against an adverse wind. Two relay races were added’ to the* programme, these, being for the ladies’ arid men’s teams as practice for the big day meeting to- be hold on January 2lst. A little confusion resulted, in the dark in securing the changes, but tho training should be valuablefor the day meeting. The various results and announcements wore made aver the broadcast, system, operated by Mr. Parkinson.
