Al> VANCE MAINTAIN El > The market for maize has been quiet over the holiday period, and remains so. little inquiry being made, states the Gisborne Herald. Since the advance in price, there lias been no alteration in the quotations up to 5s 3d for January and February delivery, but in view of the lack of business, this is only a nominal value. Because a number of the importing firms have been closed over the holidays, there may be no alteration in tlfe oosition for a few Weeks.
Crops in the district are backward, and are badly in need of rain in many cases, and if the dry spell continues the eventual yield may be affected. Alost of the early-planted crops are making good progress, the backward ones being, mainly those which were planted late when the soil was very dry.
