HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES
FAR MEGS’ EXEMPTION NOT FAVOURED BY COUNCIL T(ho Cook County Council does not favour the exemption of farmers from heavy traffic I'oesh
This view was expressed at to-day’s meeting of the council, when a vote was taken* following the reading, of a letter from the Waiapu County Council urging exemption for farmers. “It is most unfair to charge the farmers’ lorries the. full rate,*” Cr. G. V. Smith declared.
Cr. Smith added that the farmers’ lorries, were on thoroad only about once a week,, whereas the contractors’ vehicles werF on the road every day for tln> same fees. Tit would* be fairer to tax on the petrol 'used than on a flat rate. ’ .... •>-C- V, - Hen son : . sa id' tlia't - the - OoVoriiment was making the carting regulations so drastic, 'that farmers wore forced to seciufe- their own lorries. Cr. ,M. T. B. Hall believed it would be dangerous to exempt certain classes of trucks owing to the many difficulties that would .crop--up. He favoured the abolition of the heavy traffic lee, which was an unfair levy, and l a slight increase on the petrol tax.
