GARDEN PARTY FAVOURED WITH SUNSHINE <¥ " GOOD BUSINESS BY STALLS

'Parotitis’ Day, in the "form of a Garden Party, was held at the Headmaster’s grounds last Wednesday, when after very doubtful weather, the function was favoured! with warm sunshine which attracted a good attendance of parents and well-wishers.

The chairman, Air, A. .15. Payne, before calling; on His "Worship the Mayor, Air. G. S. Moody, to declare the party open, thanked the teaching stuff, the ladies’ committee and all those who had assisted in assuring the success of the function.

Air. Moody, in opening the function, referred to his interest in the school and expressed the hope that the pupils would always give of their best.

The various stalls were well patronised, those in charge being as follows : Produce. Mrs. Mansell and Airs. Hollard. Cakes, Mrs. Payne and Mrs. luskip. -Sweets, Allrs. Anderson and Mrs. An Id. Ice Creams, Mrs. Hampton, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Steptoe. Afternoon tea, Mrs. Cave and Airs. Reeves. Those ladies and all who assisted are to he congratulated oil the willing manner in which they helped and for the excellent results achieved. During the afternoon a* very interesting programme' ol items was given hy the pupils. the setting ol the beautiful grounds adding to the charm of the items. Competition winners were as follows: Dressed Doll, Airs. Harold l Jones. Iced Cake, N. Snell. Dinner. Mr. C. 11. Fleming.

ANNUAL PKIZE GIVING PRESENTATIONS BY MEMBER ITEMS BY CHILDREN The annual prize-giving function of the Opotiki District High School was held in the Regent. Theatre last night when there was a large attendance ol pupils, parents and others interested. On the platform were the district member, Air. A. (J. 11 uitquist and Mrs. Hnltquistwho m*ado a. special trip from Wliakatane to attend the function; the Mayor, Mr. CL S. Al.oody, flic County Chairman, Air. \Y. A. Gault, the chairman ol the school committee, Mr. A.'FI. aPyne, the headmaster, Air. A. S. de Montalk, members "I the school ecwnmittec, representatives ol the Old Pupils’ Association! and! members of the teaching staff.

The chairman. Mr. A. l'l Payne, \v<»lronu‘(l Mr. and i\lrs. Hultquist and expressed the appreciation of the committee for the manner in. which -Mr. II ultquist bad looked alter the needs of the school. A welcome was also extended toi Mr. Gault and .Mr. G. S. Moody, both of whom were past pupils 111 the school. Appreciation of the headmaster’s work and that, of the stall was a Ism expressed and the parents were also thanked lor . their cooperation. The representatives ol the Old Pupils’ Association. M'r. T. Hickey and' Miss Joy Kelly, were also welcomed and the Association was thanked for their support at all times and their financial support in connection with the prize-giving. Mr. Payne congratulated tin*- sueoesst id pupils and gave a word ol encouragement to- those who had not been successlul. A special message was given to those who were’ leaving school.

Mr. Moody spoikc of the pleasure it gave him to again he present at the function and congratulated the successful pupils, at the same time congratulating those who had not gained prizes hut who had tried. Ho hoped these pupils would he successlul next year. Rest wishes for happy holidays were, extended by the Mayor. Mr. W. A. Gault, as representative, of the County Council expressed his thank;* to the committee, for the invitabiotii to lie present at the function. As an old pupil of the school he was deeply interested in the progress it had made and ho extended his congratulations to the children and to the

headmaster and stall'. Pupils were fortunate in having, many advantages which the children of his day had not imd. They now had a. High School, Technical School and additional amenities which made school life »o pleasant and gave the pupils many mere opportunities oil being iitted toi go out into the world. He extended seasonal greetings and hoped the children would enjoy happy holidays. The children then sang Sea Shanties, and Mr. Hnltquist ALP. was called upon to deliver an address. Air. Hultquist said he was pleased to he present at the function, more especially as it gave him an opportunity to extend to all present his host wishes for a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. He. congratulated the headmaster, teaching staff and pupils cm the successful, year which had been experienced. He also made mention of the cooperation of the parents and the very energetic committee. Air. Hnltquist said that he had- had every) hope of being able to announce at this function that, the grant had been made for the building of the new high school. Ho was unfortunately, not able to do this, hut ho could say that, it would not lie long before the grant would be made and tenders would be called lor the construction of the new school. (Applause). He offered his congratulations to the successful pupils and extended advice to those about to leave school. To them his message was “You got wlmt you go in for”. To this message he added, “ —hut yen ve got to go in for it”.

The pupils then gave a very line rendering of the Christmas Carol “Noel”. The blending of the children’s voices in this item is worthy of special mention. Air. A. S. do Montalk, headmaster, prefaced his remarks by thanking the speakers for the good wishes which were heartily reciprocated. He also thanked the speakers lor the sound advice given and all parents and wellwishers for their attendance. He reported that the year had npt been an altogether easy one. Of a staff"of thirteen there had been eight changes during the year, and eight members ol the staff had had leave* of absence for illness during the year. Air. do Aloiitalk expressed bis deep appreciation of the. loyal support, efficient service and co-operation which bad been given bp members of the staff. He also thanked the members of the school committee for their co-operation. Ne\er bad be worked with such a. pleasant, genial and helpful committee. A special tribute was paid to the energetic chairman, Air. A. K. Bayne., tor bis assistance throughout the year. Mr. do Alontalk also mentioned several young people, pupils who weie candidates for the teaching profession, who had so ably assisted (.luring the shortage* of teachers. r l hey had proved themselves capable, patient and efficient. All items of special interest such as the visit of the Hon. p. Fraser, wore mentioned in the report, and thanks were extended to the Opotiki Athletic Club for their help in connection with the physical activities of the school. Appreciation of the co-operation and help given by the Old Pupils’ Association was expressed and the strong bond: of friendship and sympathy which existed between this body and the school. He urged all those leaving to join the association and keep contact with their school. In expressing the hope that the children would enjoy their holidays, Air. de Alontalk offered a special appeal to them to he careful of the traltici on the roads during the holidays. To those about to leave school. Air. de Montalk extended his host wishes for their success, together with helpful advice.

A norther song “Drink to Mo Only with Thine Ryes” was sung by the children, and then prizes were presented to the successful pupils by Mr. A. G. Hultquist M.P. who extended bis congratulations. The presentations were made amidst applause. At the conclusion, Mr. Payne thanked Mi. Hultquist for making the presentations stating that lie felt «»•<’ through this, special value would he added tm the prizes for the children. A film I number by the children, “Forty Years On”, was followed by the singing ol the National Anthem which concluded a very successful function.
