GOVERNMENT’S STAND EXPLANATION PROJECTED MR. HULTQUISTS TOl’R BAY OF PLENTY ACTIVITY According to information supplied to the Opotiki News, it is possible that early in the New Year Mr. Hultquist, M.P. tor the Bay, of Plenty, may make u comprehensive tour of the Bay of Plenty Electorate- andi address a .number of meetings for the purpose of explaining more completely the Government policy in regard to exchange control and the development of secondary industries. Mr. Hultquist maintains, that there is much to be gained by discussing the whole question with his constituents and ensuring that the electors have a thorough grasp of the financial policy which is being pursued. It is unlikely that- the tour of the electorate will « take plaice, bet ore February, however, as it is expected that a Caucus of the Government Party will be held about the middle of January when the campaign to assist New Zealand industries will be discussed ami plans filmllsvd for a still more vigorous effort

During the week-end just past, Mr. Hultquist visited Te Karnkm and met a full attendance of members of the Bay of' Plenty, 1938 Labour Campaign Committee. The meeting was, in effect the final meeting of the L.lt.C. sitting as the 1938 Campaign Committee, and it will in future resume its normal functions* as the Labour Representation Committee.

At a later date a full and complete report and balance sheet in connection with the recent campaign, will be circulated to branches and affiliations of the party in the electorate, hut the preliminary report showed that the campaign had been concluded with a credit balance, a,ml all liabilities had been met.

Mr. Hultquist returned to. Whakatune on Sunday evening with delegates from the Whakatano-Opotiki end of the electorate. On .Monday Mr. Hultquist left for Auckland, where he ha,d several matters affecting the electorate to attend to in tho city and was to return to Whakatane to-d'ay.

To-morrow In 1 will attend the prizegiving ceremony at the “breaking-up” of the Opotiki District High School, and will leave Whakatane again on Friday next for Auckland and .Wellington to finalise a number of matters, IpTorc thi‘ holidays.- -Mr. Hultquist will return to Whakatane alter his Wellington visit on Wednesday,

the 21st. inst. but will leave again on the following day with Mrs. Hultquist to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays with Mr. Hultquist’s parents in Auckland. He expects to be away for at least a fortnight.

Formation of New Branches. - It was reported ati the final meeting of the Bay of Plenty 1938 Labour Campaign Committee held l at Te Karaka during the week-end, that a new branch of the party had been registered at Runtoiria since the election, and a large, number of members had joined at tho initial meeting. Further new branches are in the process of being formed at Tokemaru Bay and Omaio. Steps are to he taken early in the New (Year To form branches at Wai.mana,. Waiotahi, Awakeri, Motuhorn, Heston,’ Wnereugu-u-hika, Puli a., Te Puia-Waipiro Bay, and Wlmngara. The possibility of forming branches in other parts, of .the electorate is to he explored as well and vigorous efforts are to be made for the purpose of increasing the membership and efficiency of existing branches. It. is intended that the district member Air. A. G. Hultquist will assist in the intensive organising of the party in the electorate, by addressing meetings and making personal appeals to electors toi join the party.

It is the intention of the Labour ( Representation Committee to commence almost immediately to prepare for the next election, and to commence raising funds again early in the New Year. An innovation in the new period of

intensified which' is to take place will be the formation oh a number of women’s branches of tlie party. Arising out of the meeting of the Campaign Committee a number" of recommendations will be circulated to existing branches and . affiliations and their co-operation sought for the purpose of - commencing the organising campaign as soon as possible. Good and all a» was the organisation in the recent campaign, it is prophesied by prominent officers of the party that the new effort being made will result in the building up of a co-ordinated body which will, from an efficiency point of view, far excell that which has been in existence during the past three years and which was itself more efficient than the organisation of 1933-1935.

Since the recent general election, Mr. A. G. Hultquist lias had very little rest, and is looking forward to the Xmas and New Year period when he intends to take some time off work and away from the; electorate.

.In addition to, having to answer nearly 500 congratulatory messages in connection with his success, there was an accumulation of several hundred letters of a strictly business character which ho had to attend to in his capacity as member. Even yet he lias net caught iii> on the arrears and has had to obtain assistance. Two visits have been made to Wellington, once to a Caucus of tin* Government Party and more recently lor the purpose of attending to electorate matters which required him personally in-

terviewing Ministers -and departmental officers.

The inevitable urge in members of the successful party to celebrate, the victory at the poll, resulted in a number of victory halls being held and to attend these functions Mr. liiiltquist lias had to make visits.,to Kuatoria, Gisborne, JViiikarakai, Afatawai, Opotiki, and Jvutarere. A victory Imit was held at Whakatane as well, but Mr. Hultquist was unable, to he present at one which was held at AwaJsjeri. At each function Air. and Mrs. Hultquist were cordially'' greeted by those present, and presentations were made to M!r. Hultquist at each place. At Ituatoria, a wallet containing a sum of money was ' accepted by the member in. appreciation of the services lie had rendered to the district. Charges for varying amounts were presented at Afatawai and Opotiki, and o*m Monday evening of last week at Jvutarere, Air. Hultquist was presented with a fountain pen and pencil, and Airs. Hultquist with a travelling rug.
