OPOTIKI COUNTY COUHCIL

MONTHLY MEETING THE DUKE STREET DRAIN The monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council was held to-day in the County Chambers. Present: Air. AY. A. Gault (chairman), Councillors T. Burke, G. Neilson, B.A. Hedley, A. H. Blake, J. T. Clark, C. Black, J. McDonnell, S. Mhxwell, G. S. Alocdy; Air. J. T. Murry (county ('fork), and Mr. AY- AY. Upton (county engineer). A motion of sympathy to Cr. AY. Butler, was passed. Outward correspondence was read and approved. inward Correspondence. Christmas Greetings were extended to the Council from Air. and Airs. A. G. Hultquist. Drain.—Air. H. B. Noble wrote ;e notice to clear his drain and -stated that lie had cleared the drain lastyear. ATr. Alaxwell suggested that the councillors-inspect .the drain. The chairman said that the council should -see that the drains were cleaned. It was decided' toi get a report hrm the engineer on the eastern drain. l,n connection with the western drain several, property owners asked the council to clear the drain, charging the settlers. The council decided to do this providing all settlers were agreeable. Deputation. - Mr. O’Reilly, who waited on the council, stated that there should he a 4-chain access road to his property, near the Matakerepu bridge, which had not yet been handed over. The council decided to obtain a report from the engineer. It was decided to interview Mr. Harrison with a view to coming to some arrangement. Mr. W. White wrote stating that he was prepared to give the land for the road providing Mr. Ruff carried out the fencing. Travelling Allowance. —A letter was received from a union secretary stating that- the council had not- paid travelling allowance to men on No. I 3 scheme. Left to the engineer.

Mr. Semple, Al.inister of I'ullic Works, wrote re bridging on the Alo-t-it road, stating that the Department was willing to make a tree grant oi £oSO for the Alarumoko stream on condition the council would attend to further read work. The engineer was instructed; to lay off the work and it was decided to write thanking tin* .Minister. Blocked Drain.—The Opotiki Bacon Factory <■<>. wrote complaining that the Duke Street drain was blocked at tin* lower end. * It was tleeided vo serve notices on the property owners. Milling Trees.—Mr. Hustler. Toatoa. wrote stating that there were a few? trees which the County Council had authority to sell. Air. Hustler asked the council to make an offer. Cr. .McDonnell spoke in support ol the request stating that some trees on council property had disappeared. The engineer was asked to make a report. Harbour Hoad.-—Air. Robert Black, Waimana, wrote re road round Ohiwa harbour, stating that the road reserve shown on the plan was well grassed and was originally a Maori pa. Mir. Black asked for reasons for deviating the road.—lt was left to- tin* clerk, to reply. Hoad at Waimana.—Air. 'Hminyiie wrote' re mud near Waimana stating that that portion of the road is in the Opotiki County, and asked the council to effect repairs. - ihe council decided to carry, out repairs.

Bequest lor Beliol. —.Messrs. Potts and Hodgson wrote enclosing a letter Omni a farmer who stated that he had had had luck on account of facial exzema and asking lor relied in rates. —lt was decided t ( > obtain a report. Native Bates.—The .Minister of Xative Affairs wrote re allegations that Natives had been advised not to pay rates. The Minister stated that as the Native had probably spoken through an interpreter a mistake may have been made. Thanks.—The’ Opotiki A. and I’. Association wrote thanking the council for its donation. Hoad Safety.—The Minister ol Transport wrote in connection with tin* distribution of material lor the road safety week. The council decided to co-operate. Biiatuna Road. —Air. R. J . Abbot, Kutarere, wrote enclosing consent ol certain settlers on the proposed- Runtuna rood. The chairman said that the council was not in ta-voiir ol putting a road over the mud-flat at All. Fullerton’s property. Lt was 'left to the clerk to reply. Road was accented, , subject to the district' engineer’s approval. Members’ Business. Or. Hedley. asked that the sealing of the road' from the junction to the aerodrome should he looked into. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Council on. the Wednesday previous to Christmas. Accounts amounts to .01510 were passed for payment leaving'an overdraft of .00825.
