FLOWER SHOW

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY EXCELLENT DISPLAY ; A GREAT SUCCESS The Opotilii and District Horticultural Society held its first quarterly sliow in the Parish Hall last night when there was a good attendance. Tlio quality of the flowers and vegetables exhibited was excellent and the entries in .most sections were numerous.

"Worthy of particular mention were choice specimens of large coloured clematis which attracted considerable attention. as did specimens of protea and ecliium. An anchor of roses made by the society’s secretary, .Mr. Go i Lisli, made a very attractive exiuoit. The quality, of the flowers 'throughout- the show was of such high quality that it would be difficult to discriminate. ' The roses, however, were a source of much admiration, and Mrs. Pilkingtcn’s specimen bloom which secured, first prize in that section, m which there were 15 entries, was a particularly fine flower. Two other blooms in this section failed to gain a place because they were not sufficiently full.

Although there were not many entries in the sweet-pea. section the quality of the flowers was very good for this time of the year. ' The winning specimen bloom was entered bv Mrs. Rail'd, the flowers being well spaced oil the stem. In the cut flowers section, the stocks were probably the outstanding exhibits. The specimen spike class was won by Mrs. Stewart, while Mrs. Jeffery, took first prize in the collection of Jour varieties.

Twenty entries were received in the decorative section for the best- jar of flowers of two distinct colours, while 12 entries were received in the class for a tied bunch of flowers, malting a very attractive benchThe exhibits in the fruit and vegetable section were of good quality and were in keen demand when the exhibits were auctioned at the conclusion of the show. The flowers also wen- eagerly sought after and the money received from this source should prove a valuable contribution to the society’s funds. .

Great credit- for the success ot' the evening is due to the society’s energetic secretary. Air. Geo. Lisk and to the stewards and committee who were responsible fox' so tine a show. Garden lovers will look forward eagerly to tlie next, quarterly show and it is certain this will he an even greater success.. The judges were: Air. T. G. Johnson (flowers) and Air.
