SHOW ASSOCIATION’S RATES

REQUEST FOR I ASSISTANCE ' ~ T DEPUTATION TO COUNTY COUNCIL , A deputation front the Opotiki A. and P. AssofiationlT consisting of Messrs Stansbury, A. N. Davies and TY H. Pearson waited on the County Council to-day asking for financial assistance in meeting arrears in rates to the Borough Council amounting to £73. Mr. Stansbury said the Association hoped to be able to meet the'borough which liacl given a donation equalto last year’s rates. The last two years’ rates had been wiped off but the previous three years were still owing. A Ur. Merry explained that the pruc- ' tice was to remit rates. . ’ lu reply to a comment by a coun-.y cillor Mr. Davies said that they did. not want to* start an. argument, town * v. country. Air- Stansbury. in reply to a Question, stated that it cost £-100 each year to run the show, and a loss of £9 was shown on the show account in ten years. Cr. Maxwell enquired whether, if this. year’s rates were donated, the borough council would be -prepared to wipe, the whole amount off and give the association a fresh start. Air. Stansbury said he could not say but it would be a big help. The deputation then retired. Ur. Alaxwell .moved that £22 be donated this year. Seconded by Cr. Fairweatlier. / Cr. Black said that it was very hard working on the association tor some years and if it- were not for £ooo from an art- union, the association would have been extinct long ago. Cr. Neilson thought- that £22 was too much and suggested £5 ss. Cr. Hedley said he was in sympathy with the association, hut it was not the duty of the council to subscribe to funds. The. rates had been raised this year and would probably have to lie raised again next- year. He moved that £2 2s lie donated. Cr. Ale Donnell seconded Cr. Neil- * soil’s motion, and said that he thought them should he one show-for the whole of the Bay. Or. Alaxwell said that racing had * been bunched and it shows were all bunched into one it would be taken away from Opotiki. Other councillors also strongly objected- to the suggestion. Cr. Clark suggested donating £lO. Or. Alaxwell offered to withdraw his motion, and support Or. Clark’s. Cr. Moody said ho thought Or. Alaxwell a little hasty in withdrawing as he had. intended supporting Cr. AlaxwellOr. Butler drew attention to the couneiTs overdraft and said it would shortly lie .£IO.(MA). MV. Gault then put the amendment * that £lO be donated, and this was lost on the chairman’s casting vote. The further amendment that £5 5s be donated was then put and carried. Or. Black thanked the council on behalf ef the association.
